Lowballing - getting really prevalent? And what do you do?
I've been just ignoring lowballers. Seems like lately, that's all I'm getting though. Even on a couple of deals that were sort of reasonable, and I tried to do anyway, they have not come up with the money. Then on top, they expect me to pay the shipping and the paypal Huh? Those are the buyers responsibility where I come from.
You guys getting this a lot these days too?
How do you handle it? Ignore? Counter offer / meet in the middle on price? Tell them FO? Make all prices include shipping? (Puts the onus on me to pack it in the smallest box and find a cheap shipper. But shipping to East Coast from West always costs a lot, and the difference in the EC / WC advertised price to include ship could F the deal).
My FS stuff is usually mint cond, not wacked. For me to take the time to clean and inspect thoroughly (to accurately report condition), take good pics, pack and box it right, ship it insured, reschedule my day to ship it quick, etc, it's not worth it to sell it lowball. Especially for stuff where I upgraded and the FS items are mint and fairly priced.
Do people not understand or appreciate good sellers anymore? Or should I just cut my prices, not clean or take pics, drop it in whatever gigantic box with no packing, stick them with the ship cost, and make them hassle fedex ground for the insurance payment if it does get damaged? Sigh. [/end rant]

i counter offer.. and I always calculate shipping based on their location and add it on top.. if they don't like it, owell, they can try and find it somewhere else.. everybody wants to pay the lowest amount possible.. and sometimes lowball offers are just because someone doesn't know what things sell for new, or used..
it does get annoying sometimes though..
it does get annoying sometimes though..
Seriously.. nothing you can do, but wait.
But think of it from the buyers perspective, obviously they want the best price so they are going to start offering low. Counter offer is a good idea, the lowballers seem to dissapear after that.

Here is the way lowballers work.
They are bottom fishing. They have a set price in mind but they want to ***** you on the price. Then you will counter offer and since most of the time, people will lower the price to just get rid of the part. Hence they end up paying less then their set price.
This is why when people call my place of business, we ask how much they want to pay. If they say they can pay XX.XX amount and its above our cost and maybe even above our resell, we will deff book the order.

Just ignore low-ballers. If their offer is close to your what you have in mind, then counter-offer. Otherwise, don't waste your time. The key is to have plenty of time & patience to move your items. I never sell anything 'cuz I need $. I sell 'em 'cuz I don't need the parts and I will wait until I get the true value (based on my mind) of the items.

I was selling my mint SSR comps + Azenis tires for an asking price ~$1200. Got one offer for $400 shipped, and the guy was dead serious.
And I like this: "Cash in hand!" Like cash in hand is going to make me sell the item for 50% less (or more) than what I am asking.
People seem to forget that while a lot of us will deal, there is this wonderful place called ebay that allows us to not have to take stupid lowball offers.

i nicknamed honda-tech "Lowball-tech" because it really is a buyers market.
Everyone here seems to want to dump parts for one reason or another. Just lowers the cost of everything.
Esp. with the parts I sell, lowballers are a daily part of my life. I get frustrated when I sell a part for 1000 dollars and i have people offering me 300 dollars.
Its like, do I waste YOUR time... do you want me to send you random SPAM email to waste your time reading.
Then I realize, they arent trying to be rude, just trying to get a good deal.
Basicly, just hold the line. If they want it, they will buy it. Sometimes 50 dollars will make or break the sale, you have to feel the guy out and see whats up.
A lot of people low ball just because they want to see if they can get it for that price. Not that they would actually buy it.

Word. If someone wants $1000 and you say "how about $900" that's reasonable. But if you're offering 50% of what they ask for, go eat a dick.
I think that it is all who you deal with i sell alot of parts and im looking to buy alot of parts, then i see alot of people on HT with parts for sale, when you buy something there is no way that you are going to get the full return i have come to realize that.
When i am selling things i just think like they would for example i was selling my stock 00 si cams. i asked 125 knowing that i would not get more then 75 for them so when they were like ill give you 50-75 dollars i was like sure and not dissapointed, i do agree lowballers are the worst

I'm beginning to think of going EBay too. Unfortunately, it's more time and hassle for me. Plus, I didn't think it got around lowballing, due to all the low price auctions I see closing. What do you do, just set a reasonable but low-ish reserve, and go with the 'buyer reserves right to cancel if reserve not met' clause?

True dat. Actually getting the $ has been hard. I've turned down offers for less, only to never get the cash from the higher offers, and even have the lower offer ('cash in hand') not come up with the do$h later (pissed or something about being denied?). Sometimes they are rude (or worse) though, and I really cant stand that (see below).
I'm doing the counter offer thing when appropriate, and I understand the offer / counter-offer thing. I try to search H-T a bunch for comparable pricing before I post the ads. I thought I was setting fair prices, but maybe I need to come down a bit. I'm just being patient and waiting for people who need / want good stuff, and expect it shipped right, quick, and made right if there's ever a problem. This is what I expect, so it's what I do.
Thanks all for the thoughts everyone.
You are all really right too. I Just recieved a rant PM from a guy 15 min ago (should I post it?). I was in the process of replying to his offer from yesterday, and he's hating on me cos I didn't get back to him quick enough with a counter offer because I've been super-busy. He saw this post, and assumed I was talking about him, when in fact he was one of the few reasonable offers I've had.
If he hadn't ripped on me with a schlode of BS, he'd of prolly had a deal (if he could get me the cash). Instead, I'd rather eat the part then deal with a a rude a-hole. People like that have a way of coming back to haunt you later anyway. Plus, you can't pay me to take PM's like that. Particuarly when I have other offers for the same or slightly more that came in first (I do them in order, mostly, unless I get someone who really wants it and paypals the cash). Not to mention I already turned down 3 offers for that amount earlier in the month, and came off my asking price a bit in the last week.

I will list on here first and if I get no good responses, then I list on ebay depending upon what the item is. You just need a good description, title and pictures and items sell well on ebay. It may take 15-30 minutes to do the auction well, but it helps out in the end.
I know I personally don't bid if the description is crap or the pics are fuzzy, etc. My 97 hatch is probably going on there next week, actually.
As for price, either set a reserve or price a high enough starting price accordingly.

Its seems like a lot of people want to lowball everything, I agree with the guy above who said "If you're asking $1000, and someone offers $900, that's reasonable. But if they offer like $500 shipped, thats insulting".
I don't know, the way I am is that I do research on here and on the net when I want a part. So I know what it sells for new, etc. Like when I wanted a SiR cluster I knew what JHP and PasswordJDM sold them for, and I figured, maybe I can find one for 20 or 30 bucks less on HT. If I found that price I would pay it cuz I knew it was a good deal.
The only think I don't like is when people don't list a price, they say "make offer". How do you know how much to offer? Seriously just put a price on everything so people don't get confused. If you have fair prices the good buyers will respect it and pay them.

Sorry my PM pissed you off so bad, but what was I supposed to think? I sent you a PM and email Wednesday the 28th offering $300 + I pay shipping for the final drive, receive no reply for two days, in your for sale thread you say you responded to all PMs, you create a thread where you say you're ignoring lowballers (after I had sent you another PM asking you to email me incase my PMs were not working), and then say you had no time to reply to me (even though you created 13 posts on H-T since Wednesday). I would be a lot more patient except I've got an appointment next Thursday at a friends shop to take apart my tranny to install a new Quaife differential and Toda clutch kit (if you don’t buy that, Len can verify I just ordered a set of radiator hoses from him Tuesday and 3-day aired them to me so I could put them in at the same time). Considering the offer, I figured it was worth 10 seconds of time to tell me if you liked it or not. So in the mean time, I now have to overnight (possibly 2 day air) a final drive from somewhere else to get it here this week because you did not reply. Again, sorry for what sounds like a misunderstanding, but what was I supposed to think?
BTW, I have no problem having you post my un-vulgar, un-profane, un-threatening "PM rant" to you, but if you do, be honest and post your reply to me for everyone here to see.

you guys need to remember there are a lot of more poor kids and thieves driving these cars, so of course they lowball. they cant afford it. and even if you agree to the lowballing, doesnt mean they will buy.
most of the time they just want to "pretend" they will buy

you guys forget the reason why you bought a Honda! ... it's cheap.
the cheapness follows...it's why you see 16 year olds driving R's now.
try being a store owner and having people "offer" their "deals" because they could buy the same thing used from their boyfriend's aunt's pet turtle's third cousin.

SLC, I blocked your PM's to avoid just this kind of flame war. I probably should not post this, but I will for the sake of my rep on H-T.
As I mentioned in my reply to your PM, if you needed the FD so damn bad, you should have offered more, or stated your needs. Instead you sent me a nasty PM, in which you trashed me based on invalid assumptions, and presumed to give me 'business 101 lessons' (LOL).
Good, fast, cheap - pick any two. You waited until the last minute to find an FD for your trans in the shop, then tried to grind me for a deal on an already fair price of a brand new factory sealed item. When you didn't get an answer fast enough, you punked me. I have to put up with that smack all day at work - I WON'T tolerate it in my hobby. Not EVER. Want it fast? Prepare to maybe pay a little more. Offer less? Maybe miss out on the deal. That's how it works here.
I've had numerous offers for what you offered. As yet, I still don't have any cash. How do I know you're not just another flake, pinging me with questions, but never sending money? I never got a PM from you Wednesday, but my browser crashed when a schlode of PM's opened upon login, so maybe I just didn't see it. Sorry
But I was already working with others who were in the queue before you at the same price. I waited for their cash (or not) before responding to your PM Friday.
Had you offered more than the others, or asked me for a paypal addy and said you needed it right away - you'd send me the cash immediately, we'd have done a deal. Now you're a$$ out, becuase I won't deal with you, for fear you'll call me scammer, botch the install and blame me, etc.
I have been busy with much more important things than this, including job filings that were due Friday, and medical stuff. Yes, I may have posted 13x since whenever, and 10 were probably 'Bump'. You've got 65-ish posts - Sorry, but you really don't know jack.
Rudeness sucks, and many people will not tolerate it. Why should they? The JDM FD is a popular mod that everyone wants. Other peeps have actual money, and are polite. Guess what? They get the deals.
Sorry you missed out - that hurts - I've been there, and learned the hard way not to mess around when I need something bad and it's a good deal.
Respectfully, --B

I waited for their cash (or not) before responding to your PM Friday.Had you offered more than the others, or asked me for a paypal addy and said you needed it right away - you'd send me the cash immediately, we'd have done a deal.
Try opening a legit business, doing buy-ins, paying for advertising, and THEN put up with it when it is your JOB to entertain flakes and loballers all day long.....
I feel your pain, all too well.

i usually ignore lawballers, at the most i'll reply not intereted.
but yes, if you need parts bad expect to pay more, or atlest list price. if you don't hear from the guy assume he had a better offer, or be nice and ask him to re-consider or counter offer.
as for me. most of the time my posted price are firm. but the chit your going through is the same reason why i don't push parts anymore, i just sell stuff that i don't use anymore.

What's this "you missed out" talk all about? If I missed out, why was I the one telling you I didn't want your final drive anymore? I guess you could say I missed out if you were selling it at some ridiculous price like $200.00 or less, but I only would have saved myself maybe $60 after shipping if you would have taken the $300. After picking up a new differential, clutch, flywheel, and final drive (not including the engine mods I'm building the tranny up to hold), that $60 would not exactly make a scratch in the budget, would it?
I am interested to know what your thought process is in trying to uphold your credibility and reputation by attempting to call me a liar, scammer, lowballer (mild compared to what you called me in your PM), etc.. Bottom line is even though you are not a retailer, you are trying to sell something and that requires customer service. I'm not saying it's your fault I needed the final drive to my house ASAP. That was bad planning on my part. It is your fault you didn't get my money. If I'm paying someone any amount of money and they do not respond to me (for whatever the reason), I find someone else that will care that I'm paying them. Most people would probably do the same.
As mentioned earlier, I don't appreciate you alluding to me as a liar or scammer just because you did not get my business. I've bought and sold a number of parts on vividracing.com, nasioc.com, ebay as well as bought everything for my tranny thus far from H-T sponsors (all without issues). You threatened me saying you were going to post our PM conversation and that I would have to "change my name because no one will deal with me anymore." If you are so worried about your reputation, then make true on your threat and post the whole conversation. You won't because of what you said in it, not me, I'm sure. I'm putting my reputation on the line here considering I don't have many posts on here and I have to respond to you through this thread since you blocked me. So go ahead, buck up and post the PMs. If you are going to publicly call me a liar and scammer you had better have something to back it up. A sour business deal I can walk away from and not have a second thought, but I don't take personal attacks as lightly.
