Default best pickup

i'm new to driving stick, i can drive it properly but from redlights i take off so slow

so i'm wondering, when should i be shifting gears in order to get the most acceleration

i change from 1st to 2nd around 20km/h
i change from 2nd to 3rd around 40km/h
i change from 3rd to 4th around 60km/h
i change from 4th to 4th around 80km/h

Focus more on rpms rather then actual speeds. What year and trim level is your car?

okay i guess my quesiton is what is the max rpm i coudl goto in each gear? like could i redline in 1st gear then change to 2nd, then redline again and change etc. etc.

wouldn't that allow me to pick up speed the fastest?

I think that's ideal for gas mileage. But as far as acceleration goes you want to go higher then that.

thats the fastest to accelerate... but dont plan on saving too much money on gas

ive found that usually you dont have to go much past 3k for everyday acceleration, but when i want to get there a bit faster or im going up a hill, i like to take 1st up to about 4500, then back to around 3k in second...you arent hurting your gas mileage that much and it feels pretty good in the seat of my pants

In a 96 ex you could shift around 3500-4000 and still get decent mileage.

lets wink after every post everyone! yay!

anyways.... yeah shifting high on a high revving engine wont do too much damage to the engine, or gas mileage... but constant redline shifting would be just retarded and would make your honda, believe it or not, not last as long no working honda = no fun

you have a 4cyl econo box accord that is still street legal (aka not a race car).....you dont need to be beating anyone off the line unless its a situation where you have to switch lanes ASAP......

max torque is around 4500, and max hp is around 5500......anything past 5500 is just basically wasting power

youd have a better chance of smokin em if you had a huge blunt wrap. that or if its a geo metro ur tryin to smoke nah, the accord is a fairly fast vehicle for what its got under the hood, but its not THAT fast. all you need is an h22 and you can smoke a good amount of cars then.

I thought honda's made most of their power in high RPMS (ex: 5k+ RPMS)

SO why would you shift at 3k?

yea......b series (and i guess you could say h22's) make most of their power really high.........thats because a 1.6l engine needs to spin fast to make alot of power

the f sereis motors found in accords is a "torque engine", or a "truck engine"....in other words, a SOHC 4 banger that makes more torque than it does HP (and not staggering amounts of either)........

people shift at 3K because they enjoy getting 25+ mpg when gas prices are above $2.00/gal

for everyday driving, I shift 1st and 2nd and 3rd at 4,000rpms, by 3rd gear that gets me right around 60mph, and I'm usually not going more than 65mph, so I often just shift right to 5th from there.

as for if I'm looking to waste some gas, I've noticed that 4.5k is the best place to shift out of 1st for my Accord, then 5.5k out of 2nd, and then 5.5k out of 3rd (gets me up to speed for on ramps on highways, so forth).

but I really don't do much more than 4.5k out of 1st gear, it jumps rough when I do it, no matter how I seem to shift.

and keeping up with the posts.
