Default 91 accord tach jumping

Hello all, great forum here. I just joined. I have a 91 accord lx that within the past 2 days the tachometer jerks up and down and sometimes goes to zero. While it is sputtering the car hasn't shut off, but it loses power. I replaced the ignitor 3 months ago, and noticed the tach jump like crazy while revving above 3 grand, but it didn't affect the performance. Any help or suggestions where to look would be appreciated. Thanks

Does your engine match what is on the tach?

Thanks for the prompt reply, I was hoping that might be it, as I bought a coil when I replaced the ignitor, (parts store wouldn't test parts, and I am not the greatest with testers) I'll change this weekend. Thanks alot

Ken, I haven't checked the codes, if thats what you mean, but the engine does surge while the tach is going crazy, and seems to die without shutting off. Thanks for replying.

that typically won't make your idle irratic. My guess would be the IACV or Intake Air control valve. Which adjusts idle according to exhaust tempuratures.

Purchase a chiltons manual or haynes manual for replacing it.

Also it wouldn't hurt to run some bg44K fuel cleaner through your system too .

I had changed my ignitor a few months ago and everything was fine, and now it has been jumping all over the place for a month. my engine does surge when my tach jumps up, but it was because the ingitor was sending different messages to the computer. I finally stumbled on this thread that suggested to change the ignitor. My problem was a couple of somewhat loose conections on the ignitor. I had allready changed the coil as some suggest, but that didn't do any good. this solved the problem. Thanks for the help.
