Oil Change question
I was just wondering how many quarts of oil i should use in my 99 SI since i am doing its first oil change on it tomorrow. Also, which is the best kind of non-syn. oil, pref. 5w30. Plz dont hate on this thread, my *used* car didnt come with manual and i dnot have helms, haynes etc.
you should use four quarts of oil and it is always better to go with a full synthetic or semi-sythetic preffibly Mobil 1. But if you don't want a synthetic go with Pennzoil.

if u dont hit 8k rpms everyday no point of geting synthetic. waste of money. any 5-30 will do. </TD></TR></TABLE>
An extra 10 bucks every 3k miles. I'll spend it every time! Better safe than sorry.

it's in the manual (EDIT: sorry didn't overread that part)
4.2 qt
there is a point with synthetic also, i've driven my Si for about 116k miles and it runs just as well, if not better than when i bought it used
i've been using mobile1 fully synthetic since i got it, if used for it's life it will extend the life of the engine and help to reduce wear items in the engine
note: i replace my own oil here are the costs --
5 qt of Mobile1 Fully Synthetic 5w30 from wal-mart (big 5qt jug with transparent measure on side): $25
honda filter: ~$6-7
don't forget to lube the new filter with a quick rub from ur finger of the new oil, this will help to get it off much easier when you change it next time. The new honda filter also comes with a new washer for the oil drain bolt.

please don't put in less than 4 quarts. The engine revs high and when vtec engages more oil is needed and used. You might even want to put in a slightly more than 4.2, maybe .1 or .2 more since some oil travels through the filter and thus is not in the engine at some moment. I've heard others call this charging the filter.

Castrol GTX non-syn 5w-30 ever since I had her and no complaints here. If your changing the oil yourself use a piece of sandpaper to grab the filter if your having trouble removing it. I know it always makes it easier for me.

thats why i said add it then check the dipstick i do oil changes on 4-5 civics a day, most are fine with 3.6-8 quarts of oil
edit- but people do say that VTEC motors burn oil faster...maybe start with 4

i know it'll probably run fine with about 3.7, i just feel for an individual's car you might want to put in a little more. I remember a time i put in 3.5 qt and ran it b/c that was all the oil i had at the time and when i added about .5 more it felt alot better/smoother. Should run alright with 3.6-3.8 though. Plus i know the B16a2 for some dohc reasons uses a little more than other sohc civic's. I believe the sohc uses 3.8 (according to the manual), but i'm not completely positive.

the 3.6-4 number sounds like if yo'ure doing the oil change without changing the oil filter.. 4.2 gets me to the top dot when i do oil & filter change.
Kinda OT BUT:
Where does 4.2 get you on the dipstick? Just wondering b/c some guy said go over the second dot, isnt that above max?
Im going to go back to changing my own oil since the guys at superlube always overfill it by a half a quart
But till then I have had no problems.

sohc = 3.5 qts
sohc vtec = 3.7 qts <--- All off of honda service manuals
dohc vtec = 4.2 qts
Ths dispstick has two dots for a reason: the MINIMUM (bottom dot) and the MAXIMUM (top dot). If you put more than the top dot you will be replacing gaskets sooner...(ie. oil pan, valve cover, etc.) because you are putting more oil than necessary and it will try to force its way out. Correct level is at the top dot or maybe just a hair below it.

i suggest you use the "made in germany" castrol syntec 0w-30 which is porsche approved. it can be found at some autozones?
or you can try bmw high performance synthetic 5w-30.
both are ACEA A3 oils for high performance/extended drain intervals.
can you list any other 30 weight oils that qualifies as an A3 oil?

Dont see why not. I use 10w 30 Mobil1 Syn, but used a Pure 1 oil filter. Now i heard mixed reviews w/ OEM honda filters. They say the ones made in japan are the best and the american/canadian ones suck. Can anyone confirm or deny.
