Great reply
I would get the S becuase of reliability, convertable, and sleekness. 350 would follow for the roadster look and luxury.

depends what you want
you want pure sports car, little luxury - s2000
you want more luxury, less hardcore sporty, but still very impressive - 350Z
you want 4 doors, and underpowered - buy the RX8

the RX8 has 238 HP, the S has 240. They weigh about the same, have similar torque and similar gearing. The RX8 is anywhere from .5-1 second behind in the quarter mile and 0-60. somebody's lying
The Z would probably be best for city driving due to torque, but it's heavy and the interior isn't at $30K levels. Plus I like to rev, and the Z isn't that kind of car. It's like a Japanese mustang (as a car that favors torque to make power). The 8 and Z make their power through engine speed rather than brute torque. I for one love revving, and if you do as well, the S or 8 is for you. Then if you want a back seat, choose the 8.

I agree with this guy
I too found myself debating this dilemma two weeks ago... you know the outcome, but I can back it up :D
The 350Z was a nice car - I love the front, the way they look... I wanted a convertible but I don't like the look of the Z Roadsters. The RX-8 was also a nice car, very luxurious, although I felt like if I was buying something like this, I should have just kept my Celica.
If you really want to compare them, pick up (or look it up online) Car & Driver's issue with the top 5 roadsters on the front. They compare the 350Z, the Audi TT, Boxster, BMW Z4, and of course the S2000. Guess who was rated #1? :x <3 <3
GO HONDA PAR!!!1

I looked at all 3 before buying my S2K.
The S2000 is the ultimate drivers car for the money...very little is on the car that doesn't directly contribute to the cars ability to hustle through the twisties...whether on track or a winding road. Add to it, Honda reliabilty, and the S2000 being a mature car...no first year bugs to worry about.
I never really considered the Z...it's alot of car in some ways for the money. But the interior (especially last year) was really cheap looking. Plus they have a list of common problems/TSB's/Recall's a mile long. And I don't care for the styling much.
I wanted to like the RX-8, and I give Mazda credit for taking a big risk with the car and the way it's packaged. But at the same time, I think it tries to be too many things to too many people, and as a result it's not really that great at any one of them. It's down on power...it's not making the 238 they claim...probably closer to 220 based on Dyno's and time slips. Add to that, having to constantly keep an eye on the oil, **** poor gas mileage, and the trunk isn't much bigger than the S2000's. It added up to a pass a for me. But it does have some nice things to offer..the back seats are useable for kids and smaller adults on short trips, and the interior quality, while not quite the same as the Honda, is worlds better than the Nissan. And Dealers seem to have dozens on the lot, meaning you can probably work a deal near invoice, making the car a pretty nice value if you get past the performance issues.
While all 3 cars are similar is price and aimed at the same market segment, I think they are really differenr in there on road personalities and what they offer the driver.
Go test drive them and let us know what you think of them!!

Out of those three, I'd go for the s2k as well. You will need to get used to the raw sports car feeling of the s2k, though. If that isn't a problem for you,---s2k. 350z is also a really nice car. I believe in the hand of the right driver, it will be VERY comprable to the s2k on the track. The only thing that keeps me from buying a Z is the tire feathering issue. It's an on going problem with these cars, so until they get it fixed, it will always be second in that line up you posted. RX-8 can just sit there and look pret....I mean, ugly

for som reason, i love revin high too
its give me the greatest feelin.. ever since i was young and had an under powered car.. the z revs pretty low
but has alotta torque and power. the rx8, because of how the rotary engine gets power, it doesnt accelerate as fast as the others from the beginning. i really see no bad points on the s2000 on performance. i jus wished they had a hard top version and didnt remind me of the miata soo much. i am jus focusing too much on the negative side.. there are goood points too alll 3 of themm

well, i test drove the RX8... I drove my S2k up to the dealer to try one. Even the salesman there said to just stick with the S2k. I drove it and it just felt so...numb.
I think the S gives more thrust and its a fun car to drive. In the 8, you kinda feel like you're driving a lightweight sports sedan more than a 9g screaming VTEC rocket. Both cars are good but for just the excitement alone, get the S2k.
When i got my S2k, one of my guys just picked up a 350. Good torque but its less geared towards performance. The turn in response fell short and so did the steering gear ratio. Its good if you're older and upgrading from an S2k.
The 8's only plus is the seating. Both the 350 and S2k are 2 seaters. Overall, i've driven all 3 and the 350 is most civil to drive around but at that premium price, i think you'd be better off with an S2k cause it saves gas and like the Miata, it says "go ahead! toss me around" but in a much deeper voice.

S2000 is too much like a go kart, 240 HP means nothing when you only have a wussy *** 147 lb of torque... thats preatty sad, so sure the car SOUNDS fast at 9,000 rpm but really its not that quick, and with as much torque as most midsize sedans your not going to feel that much pull....
350 is a wicked car, good torque, good HP and by far the nicest looking of the 3 of you ask me.
RX-8. What a joke that car is, SERIOUSLY underpowered 4 door midlife crisis mobile....the RX-7 must be rolling over in its grave looking at the P.O.S that replaced one of the best sports cars of all time.. My .02

I really hate to do this on this board, but I agree with you on all of your points mazdillac. As my luck would go, the 350 came out about 6-8 months after I got my S2k, then along comes the Evo, STI(personal favorite), and now VW R32. Back at the end of 01 there was nothing to choose from.
speed4tu - Why don't you sell the S2k and buy a 350?
I like both of them. I would go for the 350, since I'm not really a convertible guy, but it's that tire issue with the 350 that keeps me from getting it. I like the styling, power, etc.
And mazdiliac, the s2k and 350 run similar times. You're saying the s2k is slow but the 350 isn't? Funny how you just base that on engine output numbers alone. Race an Elise. They've only got 190hp and 130 lb/ft of torque. That car's GOTTA be slow
