Forgive me as I am not familiar with these heads but is it normal for the two middle head studs to stick up further and the tips of the valves to stick up that far past the retainers?
Thanks, looks like fun.

That is correct the 2 middle Head studs (ARP studs by the way) stick up further than the rest simply because of the cast of the head...The top Stud is the #1 stud and the bottom is the #2 stud...both of them are taller studs cuz the cast of the head is higher up...Thanx for the opinion!

Damn it...i started it tonight...and it sounded like **** so i shut if off...and ran a compression test...from right to left (4-3-2-1) i got this...
| 20 | 135 | 30 | 115 |
The head cant be the problem, all new valves, and all were lapped in...also a new head gasket and copper spray...ARP head studs and trq'd to 70 ft lbs...stock bottom end, bottom end didnt have a problem before i did the head build, so why would it now!?!?
Help

wow those are horrible compression numbers.
what valves are those and who installed them? did the properly machine/grind them to fit that head?
check your cam timing first.
then check to see that your valve lash isnt to tight causeing the valves not to close completly.

Whoa, too much to know...i dont know much about what you said...the valves are OEM valves brand new..and lapped into the head...mmm dont know how to check the rest...cam timing tho is fine, the cam gears and crank pulley are all lined up...that wouldnt affect compression #'s though...would it?
damn man......you put the head on the car and you dont know how to check valve lash?
i can guarentee that all of your lifters are out of spec and causing the valves to stay open. (provided that your timing belt all lines up correctly like you say)
you need to get measure the clearence between the base circle of the cam lobe and the lifter face and make the adjustment. you need the right size feeler guages to do this. you should use the helms manual to do this procedure if your unsure.
once you remove the cams and lifters from the head your always supposed to re-adjust the valve lash.
hope it works out.

like non-VTEC said "valve lash". my money is also on your valves esp since they are new and you put in different cams. even if you just change to a different set of valves or mix your old ones around...you will have to readjust your valves.
well when you removed the cams and the lifters did you mix them all up? or did you keep them in order? did you just put them into any spot when assembling the head again?
if you just mixed them all up it's probably the valve lash.

In the helms manual i see section 6-3 titled "valve adjustment" is that the valve lash you speak of? i didnt totaly mix it all up...the lifters on the intake side were put into a bag and labeled intake, and the exhaust in a bag labeled exhaust...but not cylender specific:-/ Thanx

, espically if you plan on using bigger cams, like you should with your current set-up.
