You want to paint your car yourself....
First, i hope you have a garage to paint it in.
Also, hope you got at least some fans to exhaust the fumes?
First, sand down all the chips and rough stuff off you car. You can use a electric vibrating sander if you wish.
Then prime the areas where you went through the paint. If you see the metal, apply some zinc phosphate primer first.
Then sand the car with at least some 400 grit (500 prefered). Sand until all the shine has been removed. Remember, always sand in the same direction.
Then apply 2 coats of base and top off with a good 3 coats of clear.
Most importantly, make sure your car is washed, degreased and free of dust. Also, make sure you respect the flashtime of your particular paint system to avoid a **** job. Apply thin wet coats and you should be fine.
Now you can get paint supplies from a good automotive parts store. Make sure you buy a complete system, from primer to clear from one paint maker. This way, you avoid compatibility issues.
Get yourself a good respirator. Because that stuff is nasty. Especially if you are not going to use an HVLP system.
Lastly, the key to a good paint job is the way your gun will be adjusted. So if you are using a conventional siphon feed gun, proper atomization of the paint is crucial.
good luck

After you spray the primer, spray a very light dusting of black spraypaint over it. Then when you block sand it (you can use 400 wrapped around a paint stick), you will know where any low spots are if there is any black still showing.
