Default ITR Power Steering

Anybody else feel the ITR's power steering is way over-boosted? Without removing the power steering completely, is there a way to cure this?

Overboosted... yes

Try driving around with the belt off for a few days. May be a bit tough a first. See how that feels.

The AEM pulley kit (PS and ALT, come together w/belts) seems to reduce the "over boost-ed" feel to some extent.

Can you hookup just the AEM PS pulley without any ill affects? i know when u hookup the alternator the lights get dim and stuff.

Is the ITR steering rack a faster ratio than the Teg?

You could just put the PS one one (the ALT is also much more work).

I don't know if the steering ratio is faster, it just seems that stock it's just been over-boosted.

The AEM pulley gave a very small reduction in the boost level and it's only at low speeds. I like it better, but don't expect a big difference. Someone on this board mentioned to me an adjustment on the rack that would let you turn down the boost. Apparently it's mentioned in the service manual, which I don't have yet.

I agree that the steering on the Type R feels terrible since it's so overboosted. The RSX-S and the Celica GTS feel 10 times better. Too bad the performance of those cars suck. But they do have a nice feel.

I don't think the ITR steering is overboosted. The ITR steering is very good compared to others. Maybe the Euro/JDM ITR has a different P/S unit. I noticed that my ITR P/S pump is much smaller compared to a Civic one...

For me the only significant flaw in the Type-R is its overboosted steering. It is actually stiffer than the majority of power steering racks, but that is not saying much. I'd love to swap a manual rack in but most manual Honda racks have poor ratios.

The only one I've heard that's geared better was the one from the HF CRX (by the same token maybe the VX and HX as well for civics).

its not overboosted...its suppose feel smoother...I would only worry if the respose was bad like the in a 1977 Cadilac or somehting...which is really boosted and but has poor response.

Do you know what the ratio is on these? I wonder if a swap would be possible.

Instead of modifying the power steering unit under the hood, change to a smaller steering wheel should help. It would require more torque to be turned from your arms, thus it wouldn't feel as overboosted.

The stocker is way too big anyway.
