Default Somone explain to me how final drives work?

The problem here is that I went to the track last week and my setup is a high compression N/A. I went down the track only to trap at the end of third gear. I made decent runs, but I was use to trapping in 4th w/ my old transmission (USDM Type R) I've gone through two transmissions and I don't know exactly what I have, people tell me its a GSR, a tech tells me it's a B16. But I trap 3rd gear @ 99mph. I'm thinking LS.

The question here is, if i got a JDM type r tranny w/ the 4.785 final drive, this will acclerate my car faster right, and hence I'll trap 4th or maybe 5th gear. Right? and also if i were to get the ATS 4.9 final drive what would be the difference between the JDM R and the ATS final?
