Help with weird tapping/ ticking noise
97 Prelude- Took it to the strip and after 2 runs noticed a knocking and ticking sound. Replaced the rod bearings and the knocking is gone but there is still a loud fast ticking noise coming from what sounds to be the top end. Adjusted the valves and the noise is still there. (not 100% sure if they are done right though?) It doesn't sound like the "normal" Honda ticking or the injectors. The noise is always there, although I haven't let it warm up b/c I didn't want to leave it running that long. I would say it's about 4-5 ticks a second. Someone please help!!
Sounds like it could be the ignition wires..... I have had it where you loosen the connector that "clicks" on to the spark plug causing a spark in the wires themselves. They make a very distinct ticking sound. You can usually feel which wire it is....... or use a stethescope and you can hear it.
Did you recheck all the valves after you torqued down the 10mm bolt on the rocker arms? sometimes the initial adjustment gets messed up when you torque them down, so you might want to double check them again if you havent already
I did not recheck the valves, I guess that would have been a good idea. They are such a pain, not hard, but a pain, plus I wasn't exactly sure where to set the intake side to adjust them. I took it to the dealership to have them do it. I also was thinking maybe injectors, a bad injector. What do you guys think? The noise is not terrible but not great and can barely, if at all, be heard when you are sitting in the car with the windows up. I doubt it is the ignition wires either. Let me know what else you think!!!
When you took it into honda did they let it sit and cool down or did they take it in immediatly. Thats what happened to me and I ended up paying $107 for a **** job. This past weekend I decided to learn and do it myself, ended up about half of them were out of spec and one of the exhaust valves was at almost .010 . So I redid all of them, and went back and checked, 2 times to be exact and when I buttoned it all up and gave it a turn it was great.
Little ticking and no rattle noise at start up. But my exhaust has a leak so that sucks but that is for this weekend. Then hopefully it will be quiet.
You should try doing it yourself, alittle tlc and a couple hours should get the job done.

most likely it's valve tic, especially if you've been running your car hard at the track, and disassembled your engine it is very likely that you could have not tightened the valves.
There is also a slight possibility that one of your belts has a strand that has frayed causing it to hit your hood. This has happened to me and other people i know, occuring in idle.

Thanks everyone, it was the valves, but now I have the old problem back. On a 10 minute drive I'm guessing the rod bearings went again. The crank was scratched a little but I decided to try it anyway. I guess it didn't work!!!
So, now I'm off to find a new motor. Anyone have an h22 for sale??? Better option? Replace or repair motor?? Let me know, thanks!!!
