Default Time for Brake pads. I need some input

I know what Aaron said I should use and I know what most of you say I just wanted to completely satisfy myself on what pads I need.

I was told to get "Track pads", the kind that are not to be used on the street, what does everyone think?

thanks.

It may depend on what tires you are using Rob. The VR's may have more stopping power than street tires can handle (for arguements sake, I'm not calling AO32R's and the like street tires).

Oh good point, thanks Brian. I hope that Aaron stops by and gives his thoughts on my brake needs and comments on the tires I now have.

I know he liked the tires when he drove for a few laps. but the MXs and full track pads... I dunno.

Would it be worth it for me (not that experienced on track) to have Rcompounds and track pads?

If you want to get pads that you will use only on the track (or maybe driving to and from the track), then yes, get track pads like the Cobalt Spec VR. Swap them off the car before and after track events if you plan on doing much street driving in between.

If you want to get pads that you can use on the track and on the street, then you can probably get by with a street/track pad like the Cobalt GT Sport. No swapping required.

Discuss your needs with the nice folks at Cobalt Friction. They'll tell you what YOU need based on YOUR preferences and priorities. Don't forget to use your $20 gift certificate!

It probably won't make much difference on the track. You probably aren't using anywhere near the maximum capabilities of either your tires OR your brake pads.

If and when you feel you are ready to upgrade, if I had to upgrade one and not the other, I would go with the tires first - R compound tires for the track, and street-track pads that you can use all the time. Oh wait, that's what I'm already doing! Toyo RA-1 tires, Cobalt GT Sport pads

Get Cobalt Spec VR's or go home.

I have the GT-sports on the car, and they were fading a little bit after a few laps stopping from ~120mph+ at Mid-Ohio

And VR's on street tires work fine (ie Azenis)

For my last 3 track events I've been using the VR's with their own rotors. These things are amazing. After a few hard stops they're up to temperature and they have never faded. The have great feel and initial bite as well. I've used stock rear pads at the Beaver and VIR North, but for the Expo this year I put some endless pads tat I won at last year's Expo. I'm told they're about the same as an Axis Ultimate. Brakes were great. I ws braking right at the 100 mark at the end of the front straight with no problems. I did lock up the ABS at the end of the back straight once or twice with the Falkens. They also aren't wearing much, seem easy on rotors, and dust less than the Endless pads I have on the rear.

spec VR's and Azenis are great. THe stopping power will be more than you can handle, You will realize with more and more experience how late you can really brake with spec VR's. I would not recommend driving on R-compounds with little experience because:

1) They dont make noise therefore u really dont know when the car is going to give and if u doing something wrong
2) A less experience person will not utilize them to their extent
3) They make people more dangerous on the track!

THis is ofcourse my opinion of driving on Spec VR's on street tires and R compounds in different cars on the track.

Carbotech Panther Plus. Can't go wrong.

Again, it all depends on what YOUR needs are.

I've used the Carbotech Panther Plus. On the track, they're nice pads. On the street, they SQUEAL A LOT. Good track pads? Yes. Good street pads? Only if you want to announce your arrival in a big way. Not suitable for street use, IMO.

The GT Sports have been very nice as well. On the street, they're mostly quiet, with only the occasional slight squeal, almost never. On the track, they grip great, and haul the car down nicely from speeds of 120 mph at Mid-Ohio (and from 110 at GingerMan) all day long, without any fade whatsoever. NO fade at Mid-Ohio, NO fade at GingerMan. VERY nice pads IMO.

If you're not sure which one will work best for you, remember - brake pads are consumables, so you're going to replace them soon enough anyway. Get a set of Spec VR (or Carbotech Panther Plus) and a set of GT Sport. Try one, and when you use them up, try the other. See which one YOU like best.

OK if one person can get fade out of the sports then I would kill them. Has anyone had fade from the VRs yet?

I don't mind taking the time to change the pads for the track, I just want to be able to be lazy and put them in a day before/after the track and not have to do it at the track.

Would the VRs get me to the track and home from an event?

You can get Fade with any pad all you have to do is get them to their fading point.

The VRs will get you home but you also will be destroying the rotors. Is not that bad changing the pads at the track, so just stop being lazy if u really want to use them.

The VR's are nowhere near as abusive as say Hawk Blues. I haven't swapped them out since last fall, and will be replacing them with new ones and rotors in a few weeks. For daily I'd use Sports all around but you can street and to and from the track the VR's.

VR's front and Sports rear is what I'd suggest Rob start with. And of course speak to Andie.

nope... and I am hard on brakes. best pad I have used to date... and I have tried almost all of them.

yes.. I drove from Charlotte to central Va. (to load the car on the trailer) and the same when I returned. no noise and ok cold bite.

I would suggest the GT-Sports for you right now... then the VR's as you get faster on track.

I have a set of GT-S pads that I won at the banquet...
They would be of no use to me on track (ie. burn them off) and I have a fresh set of OEM pads for street use.

Because when you are tossing rotors faster than pads, it gets old.

It gets old? Cry me a river. What is it? two bolts and some screws and they pop off?

Unless of course the screws have fused themselves like mine....
