Timing for dummies, I need help
Ok, me and my bud findally got done replacing the h2o pump. We plugg up the batery and put some gas in the car but it wont start. It acts like its trying to catch, but doesnt. We come to a conclusion that its probly miss timed since we may have bumped a cam gear. Now, i never timed a car, and he only timed his truck once so were havin trouble. I read some threads on zc resource, but they all sound confusing. Can someone "dumb it down" for me please. BTW the car is a 90 DOHCzc crx. Thanks
well timing light is used when the engine is running afaik. since yours isnt, you should prob look at the timing marks on the crank and camgear. If that checks out and it still doesnt run, check the plug wires are in the right order if you messed with that. the ignition timing shouldnt be far off if all you did was change the water pump. If for some reason it is though, you can turn the distributor towards the firewall(counterclockwise) to advance, and away from it to retard. from my experience if you just clock it somewhere in the middle it should start up, and adjust it after you get it warmed up.
