Default Expo: My horrible ride home..............

Well, I don't even know where to start. Most guys(&girls!) there knew my transmission was having some problems, and pretty much preventing me from driving the event. The only good thing was the advance drivers had one less guy out there. My trans symptoms were only getting worse as the weekend went on.

Me and alex left alone, even though he wanted to tag along with other people; in case something should go wrong. Well, of course it only got worse once we left. All gears except 5th made grinding noises while driving in gear, and I could not get into reverse at all. Reverse=pushing. So, after the first rest stop for gas and food, I limped it into 5th and cruised for a good 30mins without a problem. We shot the **** and talked about how great of a weekend it was, even though I didn't drive. Then it happened, 5th gear went bye-bye and sort-of locked, possibly taking out a bunch of teeth. I was in the left lane doing 85, barely made it over to the shoulder so alex could push me off. Of course I didn't have the jack, left it at last years expo! I think mwestar took it home, and IM'd me. Anyhoo, We're stranded in the middle of nowhere for an easy hour. The maryland guys came buy, I jumped and waived my arms like a madman and they all stopped to help. After using their jack and some tools, we decided there was no way to disconnect the linkage and force it into a gear. They helped contact the philly caravan who was another hour away. Once they got there, it was like a cool expo 'afterparty'. They presented me with a memorable & priceless gift, which I will photograph once I get it back(in the caR).

Called AAA, they wanted $1,000 to tow it 300mi home . So we're planning on pulling the caR off the turnpike to the closest exit, alex brought his tow rope thinking ahead. Then out of nowhere, a flatbed pulls up. Jon (b18c-rsi) offered to have it towed to his house, and he had a spare transmission to lend me, a place to stay and fix it. AAA was still going to rape me but it was WAY closer than to my house. I decided to have it towed off the TP, to somewhat of a secure location. We took it to their 24hr truck repair shop, in the middle of west nowhere. I had to leave my recently purchased set of sparco's in the back seat and a bunch of other stuff. I rode with Nishant, alex rode halfway with nate, halfway on the floor of lances caR; with violet between his legs and back against a rollbar. They took us home with our luggage, but not without another incident. Nate's dump tube flew off, bounced off lances caR, and into oncoming traffic, the opposite way . Luckily it just hit lances lip and didn't do the damage we expected. So it ended up being a long, 8hr nightmare in a nutshell.

So plan A was to rent a tow dolly, use alex's jeep and go back out today to pick it up. Gas and tolls and rental are going to cost a good $300. I now feel like absolute ****, due to being sick and hungover through this whole ordeal. Saturday night>me. So now i'm considering having it towed back instead of treking out there to get it. Pulling a tow dolly empty sucks and a jeep with full-time awd eats crazy gas, not to mention alex is putting his vacation on hold until I decide what to do. I even get to drive the turbo supra while he's away.

So most towing companies want $600, I have one guy that wants $550. So now i'm trying to decide how much my time is worth, and do I want to be driving all day and night. I really don't want to do this drive again, feel like ****, but i've spent so much money this past week, and my money tree just died. What would you do?

Thanks to everyone for stopping, helping, waiting, ect. Way too many guys to list.

ITR owners are top-notch people.

yeah, the drive home was uhhhh... long.

Glad we were able to help Mike.

Have you considered trying to get another tranny, then drive out there and install that ish at that shop? Anybody got a spare b series tranny laying around?

I would seriously consider the flatbed tow home if you can afford it...

I would call the shop that installed the transmission and talk to them about what happened.

Since you didnt touch it, they are 100% at fault for the failure - and they should pay for the tow back, and compensate you for the lost $$ for track time and your headaches.

Sorry you had so many problems Mike . I didn't notice your hood up till I had passed you, but I didn't feel as bad for not stopping when I saw all the other guys that were there with you. Good luck with the car and it was great seeing you over the weekend!

I did have it! You said not to worry about it! lol.. I'm really sorry to hear about your crappy ride back though..

I suggest calling Uhaul, Budget, etc and seeing what it would cost just to rent one of their trucks and a trailer - one way from where the car is.. might be a lot cheaper..

Thanks Brian, and no worries at all. The only thing you had that we did not was torque, for the tow to the exit. It ended up working out even better, the total for the AAA tow to the truck repair place was $4.50! I gave the guy $15 and still felt "cheap". Nice seeing you and the car again, can't wait to see some of your pics!

Thanks Jon, but the tow is now scheduled. I'm looking at $550-600, and it goes right to the shop to have it sent back to the dealer. I have a feeling the dealer is going to fight me for the repair...

it sucks don't it?

i had to leave my car at the beaver saturday overnight due to unknown engine damage. i left the holiday inn at 8pm, neomugen drove me home to nj and zephyr drove pollo diablo to pick up his truck. once i got home, i drove to pollo diablo's to pick up his explodition and trailer - home and in bed at 3am. sunday i awoke at 8am and left for the beaver at 9am. i picked up my car and drove all the way back home and arrived at 10.30pm. i was completely delirious during the final 2hrs of the trip.

i was at mile marker 150 when lanceh called me to rescue apexii's pos. fortunately, the flatbed arrived before i did and i didn't have to add that hour to my trip.

by the way, the explodition has a tape player. i don't have any tapes. do you realize how bad the radio programming gets in western pa?!

to neomugen and zephr.

to pollo!
