Default On route to a hybrid beast!

After all the research about the b18/b20 vtec, I've finally decided to get started on my own. I have a 91 std hatch. My question is what should I start with? Should I get a full b18a swap & add vtec when I have the loot? Should I swap in a b16 & get a b20 block when I can afford it? Or, should I just piece it all together first & then swap it in? The reason I'm leaning toward one of the first 2 options is that my current motor is on it's last legs & I want to keep it on the road until I can sell my other cars & buy a daily driver.

Another side question...since my car is a std model, do I need to change spindles/hubs?

I'd say get a b16 now. You'll have everything you need when you're ready
to rock da bigger block. That's what i'm doing.
If your motor ***** on you before you get b16 get the b18a

yes, youll need new hubs.

I second that motion

u can always just switch crank and rods to turn into a bigger liter output

can we say 1.9 with the right size pistons

Which hubs/what model? Should I just get remanufactured ones w/ new bearings?

first u need either crx si hubs or eg hubs i even have ek hubs on mine and work fine. if you want to go b20 vtech or ls vtech i say you go ls vtech. why u ask well a b20 is just a b18 bored out to a 2.0 which means it has thinner sleeves than a ls motor so running the b20 vtech is a lot of compression and a lot of compression means alot more stress on the sleeves unless u want to change the b20 sleeves if u have the money. my friend had a b20 with b16 head it would overheat all the time. i say u buy an ls motor first then buy a b16 head and just bolt it on and have a lot of fun. also later down the line u will probably have to get better pistons but i wish i ran that set up runs hard as ****

b18A, save the extra dough that you would have paid for the b16, put that money into rods and pistons, then add the vtec head later.

i knwo a kid around here with a b20/vtec and hes cracked the block twice already (not saying it wasnt somewhat associated with poor driving/maintenance). he had to have the bitch sleeved or he probably woulda been on his way to crackin another blcok.

plus the ls is already a 1.8 so u can basically slap the b18c head on there and be ready to rock.

good luck...post up progress

Thanks for the offer temp, but if I do get the b18a, I'll just buy a used 90-91 teg. That way I'll have all the parts needed for the swap, plus my rear drum to disc swap.

Can I use hubs from the teg? Also, what dizzy/ecu will I have to run when I do get the vtec head? Do I need to get an aftermarket crossmember? Any reco's on the x-member?

Well if your going b20vtec and don't have the funds for all of it. I would advise you to go with the b16a1 full swap first.

simply because you won't have to get the ecu, distributor and some wiring later when you add the b20 block. Opposed to going B20 first you'll end up with extra uneeded parts.

Also while you drive the b16 you can rev the **** out of it and not have to worry about the life of the block. Then when you get the b20 block it'll be like a fresh bottom end. Opposed to the B20 first where you will mostlikly want to drive it harder and putting more miles on it before you get a chance to add the vtec head.

Thats just IMHO
best of luck.
