2004 v6 accord poor gas mileage
my 2004 v6 accord is giving me approx 12 mpg in the city (with a/c on). i seldom drive true highway mileage. the car has 2200 miles on it after 3 months. i have yet to take it to the dealer. any clues? thanks.
well would help if you gave a little more info...any mods (if there are any yet)....how do you drive....slow and easy or do you try to redline from every stop light? do you haul around big *** cinder blocks in your trunk? i get about ~27mpg city and ~33mpg on my stock automatic 95 lx sedan when i drive carefully.
i get about 270 miles on a full tank. my car didnt come with a manual, so how big is the tank anyways on a 01 accord? wonder if 270 is good for mix driving.. 70% city with 30% freeway. and its an auto.
My parents seem to be having a similiar problem with their 99 Civic VP (automatic).
The vehicle is rated at 32 mpg in the city, but they only get 25 mpg because of the way they USE, not DRIVE, the vehicle. They only go on short (<5 miles) trips in the city. That is the worst scenario for city fuel mileage; short trips in stop and go traffic.
I checked and replaced all the tune-up parts;
plugs, cap, rotor, O2 sensors, valve adjustment and timing; the car runs great, but nothing has changed with the fuel mileage.
I spoke to a Honda Service Rep; he advised that if the Check Engine light was not on, they could not do anything else other than tune-up parts to correct the problem. They cannot manually adjust how rich or lean the car is running via the computer.
If I recall, 2004 V6 accords are rated at 20 MPG city and 30 MPG highway. Your Accord, like my parent's, is getting 8 MPG less than listed.
So, if you are only using the vehicle for short trips in stop and go city traffic and the vehicle runs fine, then you might not be able to correct the city mpg problem.

I can't believe it, I signed up on this forum only because of this!
My 2004 Accord Sedan LX is supposed to get I think 26 City & 34 Highway, and I ACTUALLY get around 18 mpg, or about 280 miles on a tank of gas (I usually fill up 15 gallons or so). I was wondering if anyone else also had this problem, and I honestly don't have any idea why my car would run like this! I drive normally, I don't accelerate quickly, and I really don't do anything abnormal: I just drive like a normal person, but my mileage absolutely stinks! Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do or if something is wrong with my engine?

interesting......same here. 99% of my trips are less than 5 miles, probably more like 2 miles average. nevertheless 12mpg just seems wrong. i was doing better my a 98 avalon v6.
do you always fuel at one place? Maybe the gas station is screwing people over. There was this place that was near our house and they had some legal trouble because inspectors found out they were messing with the fuel. Its a strech but you never know.
And remember, those estimates (26/34) are just that, estimates. Usually you get lower milage (sometimes alot lower) based on your driving route. Plus you got the AC on, thats gotta count for something.

I have a 2003 4 cyl. accord.. I used to get poor mileage on it, but as you get more miles on the car it'll improve..
Right now I have 12,000 miles on the car and I get about 400 miles on the 15 gal. tank (mixed driving). Used to get about 300 at most..
Hopefully things will be the same for you guys!!

12 mpg is way too low (I hope you know that even though the gas capacity of that accord is 15 gal, the low fuel light comes on around 12-13 gal, a very liberal estimate of "low fuel"). I would say you would get around 12mpg if you were practically drag racing at every stoplight you reached.
Getting your gas at a different station might make sense, but if you've been filling up at the same place even when you had your avalon, then I guess it doesn't make much sense to do that. Best bet is to get it checked by the dealer. Some other people have been having mileage problems like this too (bad sensors).

i HIGHLY AGREE WITH THE GAS THING.. i did a little research on this..i went and got gas at all differnt kinds of spots...so far the best places that give you good gas milages are mainly Shell,CHevron, and 76 shell i rec the most..all the rest blah they give you super bad gass milage just givin my .02
Alright, I'm betting c0r5a38 hasn't modified his car in any way that would hurt his mileage, and I'm betting it's not lousy fuel that is causing our awful fuel economy. I usually fill up at 76 or Mobil, and as far as I know, they are both pretty good gas providers..yet I still get around 18 MPG when I'm supposed to get 26 in the city. On top of that, even when I drive freeways, I get only about 21 MPG, compared to the 34 I'm supposed to get! And it seems like c0r5a38 is having the same problem. I drive very average: I don't accelerate quickly or anything, in fact, I drive more smoothly than the avg. person! Unfortunately, I live in Los Angeles, more precisely, the scorching hot San Fernando Valley, so I almost always have to have my AC on, but I can't imagine it would kill my mileage so much! Is this problem we are having possibly a problem with the mile counter that can be fixed at the dealer? (probably not, but just asking)
A couple questions-
kev510: When did your mileage begin to improve, because I have 5100 miles on my '04 LX Accord and I haven't seen any improvement yet
c0r5a38- Have you ever driven freeway, I would like to see what kind of mileage you would get on that, because even when I drive freeways, I still get pretty lousy (21MPG) mileage!

it will get better mileage after few thousand of miles...or after break in period...DO the first oil change between 5k and 7.5 k (and not sooner) and you ll see that it does improve.
I know you'll hate me after hearing this, but I just got 30 mpg on my 7th gen v6 six speed Accord!! This is the best I'vfe ever gotten and it is in normal driving, not hiway. I've usually been getting about 24 mpg in normal driving.
Here's what I did and I'm going to repeat it soon to check if it is repeatable
1) Pumped my tire pressures up to 35 psi both front and rear (recommended is 32 F, 29 R)
2) Shifted at 3000 rpm on each upshift instead of my usual 3500- 4000 rpm.
3) Ran in 6th gear on the hiway instead of my usual 5th and kept under 70 mph.
4) Coasted whenever possible, coasting in gear instead of neutral when possible.
5) There was basically very little traffic that day so I did not have to do a lot of stop and go.
I used 93 octane Shell V-max fuel. I just got a comptech 22mm rear sway installed and I have Michelin Pilot Sport 245/45 x 18 tires.

A problem due to your poor gas mileage might be when you drive. Your speed might not stay as constant. Im assuming this because I used to accelerate a lot rather than keeping my speed at a constant. Accelerating = more gas. It takes about 15%-20% HP just to keep a car cruising constant. Try changing driving habits. It worked for me. Got 50 miles more per tank
When I used to drive a 98 accord v6, I used to get about 230-240 from full till the gas light turns on and that was with no mods, heavy foot sometimes, and mostly local. After I put in my intake I got 200-220 miles a tank with a heavier foot but that was on me. But either way, our 6th gen V6 Accords get terrible MPG. If you you're concerns are on saving gas, dont mod your car.
Make sure your on track with your tuneups, oil change, tire pressure and anything else that may cause you to lose mpg. Avoid local streets if you can take the freeway. Just stay away from any type of stop and go traffic.

I get about 27 Hwy and 24 city 2004 V6 Coupe with 2800 miles. I will admit that I am not the easiest of drivers. I have the Navi, which in it's trip computer mode, let's you see realtime the gas mileage that you are getting. It's pretty accurate. To get the good gas mileage, you basically can never step on the gas pedal. My guess why you are getting 12mpg, is the short durations of you trips. Your car is running in closed loop mode, because it never has the opportunity to warm up. When you run in closed loop mode, you fuel injection is run with it's fuel mixture at full rich.
I've got around 2700 miles on my 2004 EX-L and just averaged 448 miles per fill up on my trip this last weekend. This was with the climate controll going the whole time. Sounds like you have something wrong or drive hard.
What are the tire pressures? Try 35. Is the hand brake adjusted correctly? What is city traffic, does that mean NYC or LA where you can go 10 miles in a gridlocked hour? Then 12 makes sense. I'd put some mid grade or prem in it and run the crap out of it for a while to loosen things up. How's the oil supply? Plugs gapped properly? PS: G7 Accord tank takes 17.09 gal appx.

my 2003 EX V6 sedan (auto, obviously) averages 24 mpg (DC traffic). have got 32 mpg on 200 mile highway trips up and down Rt 81 and Rt 29. i am pleased with that. all on cheapo gas too!
now if only my brakes didn't warp every 3k miles....
