Premium gas...a must or an option?

I doubt it works the other way around huh?
Put in 95+ Octane, and it'll advance timing and performance.

nope. it's based on knock sensor input so it can't sense higher octane's ability to not knock

you should use premium
dont buy a nice car like a prelude then cheap out on gas to save 5-7$ a tank. it's disrespect to the engineering that goes into it.

Yea its weird, the H23 is 9.8:1 compression, and it asks for premium.. kinda weird..
obviously compression isnt the ONLY factor in determining required octane, but its one of the major ones..

it's because it's a DOHC high output motor

People who think that economy gas is okay for the Prelude are the reason we have the stupid/ineffective knock sensor. To steal from PGMFI Dave, "No matter how many "92 Octane only" stickers you put on the gas tank, someone is going to try to put in 87."

I have a 2001 Honda Prelude:
owners manual page 128:
Your HOnda is designed to operate on premium unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number of 91 or higher.
If you are unable to find premium gasonine, yuou may substitute an unleaded regular gasoline. The engine will compensate for the lower octane, but you may notice a SLIGHT DECREASE IN POWER AS A RESULT."
ETC... ETC....
so its ur choice dude ... but read the owners manual.... it was created for a reason.

You MUST use premium or you'll be known as a "douche-bag" el-cheapo who buys a nice car then doesn't want to pay for the basic necessities.
the car can run on regular, but a human can live off gruel...think about it

$5-7?? If premium(93) is .20/gallon more than regular(89), its only like 2 bucks/tank and totally not worth messing the engine up.

i'm in canada, premium is 10 cents/L more, 60L tank means roughly 6$ more per tank
didnt bother translating into US funds, either way 5 bucks is a conservative estimate!
point is, which i think we agree, it's not much more money

Hey I'm a dummy that used regular unleaded for about 3 months before noticing the gas door and the gauges both said "Premium Unleaded gas only". I bought the 98 used with 58K miles on it and no owners manual with it. This was just last week I realized the Premium sticker. I am a disgrace to Prelude owners and I have sinned but on the flipside, I have noticed QUITE a difference going from regular to premium. I thoroughly enjoy it.
