Default Adjustment bolt

I'm replacing the timing belt and water pump on a 92 Accord LX, everything has worked as planned until it came time to loosen the adjusting bolt to relieve the tension on the timing belt and balancing belt, but the nut WILL NOT loosen. Trying to turn it has destroyed it and now we are trying to resort to turning it with vice grips, which are not doing anything but stripping the nut apart. Did we miss a step, how can we get this damn nut off? Thanks in advance

Okay, so it finally came off. However, we have stopped working for the night because we are unsure about the next steps. We took off the timing balaner belt, but have not yet removed the timing belt. Were we supposed to keep the timing balancer belt on and adjust the crank pulley to TDC before removing it? Or do you adjust the crank pulley and cam gear to TDC after removing the belts and before putting on the new belts? The problem is that our shop manual does not go into detail here, so we worry about screwing this part up. Also, we have to pick up a balancer shaft pin, but are unsure when you have to stick it into the maintenance hole to secure the balancer shaft in place

I've had to deal with this problem several times. Someone stripped the nut on a previous belt job.

I use a small pipe wrench about 8" long ( a bigger one won't fit), then use a short pipe for leverage. Sure it might sound barbaric, but it works.

It's easier if you'd left the balancer belt on, then they would all be timed simulaneously. Anyway, no big deal. The balancer shaft on the front has a mark that you align with a mark on the block directly above the shaft. The bal shaft on the rear has a dot on the belt sprocket. If you look on the block right next to the gear at approximately the 4 o'clock position, you'll see a diagonal mark cast into the block. Line up the dot with this mark, and you timing will be on.
