Demand for Toluene?
I work for a distribution company and I was playing around this week and found have cheap sources for toluene. I was wondering how many people used it and who would be interested in purchasing small quantities. I can purchase them by the 55 gallon drum from the manufacturers. However i would have to sell them in 5 gallon buckets or less due to hazmat regulations. Let me know who would be interested in this.
I think that stuff might be illegal and explosive? It would definitely make more power but I doubt anyone will go on record saying they use it
What do you know about Toluene? Have you tried it?

I don't think its illegal because you can buy it at hardware stores (in the solvent sections).
However, I don't know if there are any special rules for buying it in huge quantities.

It is not illegal. It is commonly used to raise the octane rating of gasoline. In fact I heard that is all that race gas is, premium gasoline with Toluene added. Go to any run for fun type drag event and you'll see a lot of people dumping it in their tanks.

I don't think thats true. I know 100 octane gas has something like 14% toluene but its not the only thing addded. I can't seem to find the website I was reading before...it was like the toluene bible...but there is definately more than just toluene in racing fuel (although it does play a major part a lot of times).

well the news i heard was that it's pretty much illegal in Cali. There was a tread a while back on this stuff and they pretty much stopped selling it in Cali for some reason.

I use it at every event (autox). I keep a 3/1 mix of premium unleaded and toluene on hand and dump about a gallon in my mostly empty tank. From my calc's, it yields somewhere in the neighborhood of 98 octane. I don't do it for any big power boost, but for "insurance" against detonation. After nearly 2 years and lots of events (and lots of time spent on the rev limiter at full boost), so far so good.
BTW, it's about $8 per gallon at the local paint store. Probably closer to $5 per gallon in larger quantities. I don't think it's a good great substitute for race gas, but for people looking to boost octane just a bit to increase detonation resistance (occasionally) it works great.

alot of our local DSM guys have used it. my roommate used to use it. hell, he might have been a little dumb by pouring it in while in the home depot parking lot, but i doubt the old guys pushing the hand carts cared. they were like wtf? lol.
it does yield 98ish octane. i dont think it is recommended to run straight, but it's good to throw some in for that added safety when you add a few extra psi for the track.

Sorry, busy at work and just got back from NOPI. I haven't gotten exact pricing as of yet(still working with the hazmat and dea stuff), but most likely around the area of 3.50 -4.25 a gallon.
Toluene isn't illegal per say, but it is one of the prime ingrediants in crystal meth. So unless you want the DEA to break down your door and kill your dog during a raid one dark and lonely night, try using Xylene.
Heres a good article on making your own race gas: http://www.team.net/sol/tech/octane_b.html

be careful about buying toluene in >1gallon amounts or at all, the DEA and local narcs monitor paint store sales, it is a pre-cursor for crack/meth production.
you may get a 3 am visit from jack booted DEA thugs, you door kicked in, all your guns and cars and computers seized, your dog shot, maybe your spouse or kid as well...
get xylene instead, no one cares how much you buy, it is 117 octane, contains only carbon and hydogen atoms, blends well with gasoline, and is mostly what is in auto part store octane boosters, plus some atf for lubrication and lurid dyes to make it look cool. since it is only C8H10, it won't hurt your cats or o2 sensors.
my local paint store sells it for $7/gallon in 5 gallon pails, and $3.87/gallon in 55 gallon drums with free delivery in the city limits.
55 gallons is doable if you get some like-minded souls together for a dyno day or at the drags and spilt it among yourselves. [$213/55 gallon drum]
at 70% 93 octane pumpgas and 30% xylene, you get 100 octane race fuel at a cost of $2.56/gallon assuming you pay $2/gallon for the pumpgas and $3.87/gallon for the xylene.
if you mix it 50-50, you get 103.5 octane at a cost of $2.94, using the costs as shown above. above this ratio you may want to add 4 or 8 ounces of atf for additional lubrication. running straight xylene is not recommended even if it is 117 octane for $3.87/gallon.
DISCLAIMER: i am not your mother, download and read the MDS, keep a water hose running within easy reach, and do your blending out in your yard or driveway away from your corvette and don't smoke or set off fireworks while you blend... =;-] if you blow up your engine on the dyno or at the drags, i don't want to hear about it.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I'll never buy race gas again.

I can see the news now:
Dozens of Sport Compact owners busted for possibly running the largest Crystal Meth ring in the country News at ten.
Next we'll be buying a couple hundred pounds of ammonium nitrate because it makes an excellent cooling agent.

Haha, well, I have been speaking with the dea. But it shouldn't be much of a problem. They have been extremely helpful with me and know what Im up to(
kinda). And since i work for an industrial and contractor distribution company, i doubt there going to come busting in with dogs. However, just so some meth head doesnt learn about what im doing, no one signing up to ht after this date will be sold toluene. But monday, i will have more pricing. Shipping policies and legalities should be taken care of as well.

Uhm, no. The DEA has a list of scheduled precursors (requires a license, frequent DEA inspections, and you have to account for every drop) and watched substances (invariably you have to register possession of said chem with the DEA, although there is nothing to prevent you from buying it). A gallon or ten of toluene from your local Homeboy Depot doesn't even blip on the screen, although large quantity sales of toluene to a private individual will incur an investigation. I've been through a couple in years past - if you're not doing anything wrong or pouring carcinogens out on the ground, who cares?
So, no, the DEA does not kick your door down in a raid for purchasing legal substances.

hehe, except for 1, 4 butanediol. an analog of ghb. I found that one out when i got some for a plastics manufacturer. But no they didn't kick down your door. I just recieved many intimidating phone calls from them. After that, i made sure i checked with the dea about any chemical purchases.
But i haven't been checking this thread because no one seemed to be wanting any. I am doing this because sherwin williams is so darn expensive. I will not be making any money on these sales. However, i will give them a call today or tomm. whenever i get a chance, and i will let you all know.
