Default How much should I mill the head on my h22a4?

Just picked up skunk2 stage1's with all new valve train goodies, I wanna bump up the compression to get the most out of these cams... I was thinking 0.030 mill and removing the middle layer from the stock headgasket, Does that sound good/reliable?

i went .020 on my h23, just remeber that if you have the motor apart again and need to mill it you want to have some left to be able to take off but .030 is a good amount good luck

how much would .030 raise the compression?

when i blew my head gasket (heh, heh, i said blew my head gasket!!!)

they shaved .020 off of it cause it was warped so bad , when we got the head off and put a straight edge on it, you could damn near stick a playing card in between them.

i now compression test off the gauge.

is there like a formula to figure out how much the compression is raised by how much is milled? if i'm at 10:1cr, what would the cr be if i mill the head .020? .030? .040? .050?

milling to get compression is a BAD IDEA. Put in pistons if you want compression. You should only mill your head if you absolutely have to. Milling gives minimal gains, approx .2 points for every .010" and the max I have heard you can go to before the head is junk is .035"

Not worth it, it also changes your cam timing and ignition timing. Put in Type-S pistons if you want CR

wurd, Also if you deck it too much, wouldn't the head bolts be too long.

wouldn't cam gears and hondata solve that?

I agree with satan here... don't mill.

well i just read a couple of thread that said for every .01 milled it raises compresson by .25. So if i mill my head .020 it will increase my compression from 10:1 to 10.5:1. Now besides the cam and ignition timing what are the disadvantages?

Disadvantage... once the material is removed, it can't be put back.

well i read that you want to retard your timing 1 degree for every .012 taken off the head.

Well I don't have that much money/time to be spending on pistons, this is a spare head I had around so if something goes terribly wrong I still have another stock head I can use. Any recommendation where I should set VTEC and how high I should rev the motor with the stage1's? I have skunk2 valves, springs, and retainers.

go to a dyno and tune it if you want to know the optimal vtec engagement and redline

if you are indeed getting it tuned you will get your answers on the dyno

Ive never had a problem when I milled the head 40 thou, esp on the Type S set up cams and pistons, NO pingning , Knocking or whatsever.

Correct if I'm wrong a full point is when you shave off 40
