Default 89 civic needs some brake work

I recently got word that my brother (who knows NOTHING about cars) is in need of a brake job, all the way across the US from me.

He was told he needs new frot rotors, pads and calipers. How often do calipers just die? The car has 135k miles on it, and is only driven maybe twice a week

He was also told he needs new rear pads and also rear drums. Can drums be turned like a rotor, how often do they just let out?

He was quoted $900 for everything and I think thats insane... I can prolly find calipers (dunno why he needs them) for like 75 bucks, rotors and pads for like 100, and i dunno anything about drums.

What should I tell him? Anyone in Seattle reading this

a good sign you need calipers is a leaking piston boot, or uneven pad wear. if you find the inside pad is worn right down and the outside is not then you might need to really service the sliders good or just get new ones.

I dont know where he took it, but brake shops like Just Brakes will rape you.

Be a good brother and tell him it's time to start learning.

Yes calipers can take a dump after that much mileage. Yes you can have the drums turned like rotors, but with all that mileage, they might be too thin to do so.

To check prices on all that, try this site: http://www.nopi.com

Or if you want to buy some used parts, try here: http://www.car-part.com

WoW

and I thought they only gave those high quotes to girls or old people

check them out trying to give it to ur brother w/o vasoline

and if u can try that or get them at a junk yard cheaper and u learn also it is sort of easy if u know how it works

with those price quote people can take a simple brake job class at school and still have money for the parts, food and the six pack of Corona's!!!!!!!!!
