Default Question about hybrid piston-rod combo..

I know people use the Suzuki vitara pistons and also use LS rods for their d-series motors..
With this setup you get 8.5:1 compression..

What about using B18C rods on the vitara pistons.. The BE rod bore is the same as a d-series and the rods are .039" longer so would that up the compression since the rod length is longer.. Let me know your thoughts on this..

The longer rod would push the piston out the top of the block and into the head. It all depends on the pin height of your piston as to how much. Basically, if you ls rod wound up with a piston .010" below the deck, the gsr would make it .029" above the deck.

Hmm.. I know the Vitara piston sits lower in the block thus making the compression 8.5:1 from the 9.4:1 stock.. Im just wondering if the added legnth of the b18c rod would make up for the compression.. Or do you think im better just milling the head and deck to raise the compression back up?

You have to tell me EXACTLY how far in the hole is the piston while using the ls rod. If it is .040" or more, use the gsr. These are the kind of problems engine builders solve. An engine assembler will just put it together as is.

Let me see if I can find that information anywhere.. If not then Im guessing that I could just take 1 LS rod and piston and put it in there to see what the piston to deck height is right?

Oh, and my dads a machinst so I can get you exact measurements.. Would it also help if since the ls rod is exactly the same height as the d16 rods.. If I measured the wristpin hole to top of the piston for both the vitara and stock d16 pistons, wouldnt that tell me how much further the vitara piston sits down in the block..

And then use that information to determine if the gsr rods are a viable option?

I believe that should work. Or you can just install the crank and install one vitara and rod in the block and see if it sits below or above the deck. You really need to be careful you don't get too high of a compression ratio also.

Im wondering if it would be safer to just run the ls rods and mill the deck and/or head to bring the compression back into play.. Is there a way to figure out how much material I would have to mill off to get it to x compression if its normally 8.5:1 compression??
