anyone using an AME cage for NASA HC or SCCA road racing?
i currently have an AME 4pt roll bar in my hatch, however i welded it in while i still had a full interior and at the time i had no thoughts that my car would be transformed into a track *****.
now that the headliner and sunroof are gone the main hoop has a 4inch gap to the roof. so i am planning on cutting out the bar and donig it right this time.
AME seems to have some good prices on their mild steel 8pt cages(id only be using 6pt with two extensions to the firewall for nasa regulations) and i was just curious as if these bars are legal for when down the road i run in some echc races. this wont be for at least two seasons id think, but better to plan ahead.
now that im starting to track the car a lot more, safety is becoming my first priority. going off track at nelson ledges at 90mph and hitting a tire wall at 70 was a real eye opener for me that i need a full cage in my car.
thanks for any info and help!

art morrison enterprises.
they pretty much send you a hoop and the halo/a pillar bars already bent and you fab the rest and weld it.

I have a car for sale that already has a custom welded cage (it very safe, built by chris stiffler) this may be a easier route for you, check my signature where it says 90 civic si I just lowered the price
I know Art Morrison is a pretty highly respected mfg. of custom cages and 4-link/ladder bar suspension. They are pertty much associated with Drag Racing. If you just grab a copy of the NASA CCR and HC Rules, you can just modify your's accordingly. Sounds like the basis is there.
trigun, thanks for the offer but my car is already beyond the point of no return. it is and for the rest of its days will be a race car. i currently do a lot of solo2 with it but now the track bug has bitten me.

what do you mean? on my current bar they sent me just a main hoop in one piece and i had to cut and weld the harness bar on. i am not planning to add the two down braces from the harness bar but rather use them to make my firewall extensions.
so dose this look like it should be a leagal cage?

It might be false economy to get something that doesn't meet typical road racing requirements for design (the diagonal question) and material. Check VERY carefully to be sure that you meet SCCA/NASA rules with whatever you do so you - or the person you sell the car to someday - won't have to rip it out and start from scratch to go wheel-to-wheel or SoloI.
K
EDIT - if we knew where you were, we could point you to a regional custom cage builder who could probably do the job for you. Kits are sometimes more trouble than they are worth once you figure in shipping cost, your time, and the cost of someone doing the welding if you have to.

Those cages AS DELIVERED ARE NOT NASA COMPLIANT.
No Diagional
Extra illegal bars supporting hoop
AND
you need to ditermine the proper tube diameter and wall thickness to comply with your class rules
AND
a lot of the drag cages are built with ERW tubing which is now illegal in road racing.

if i didnt use the two illegal braces of the main hoop and just did one diagonal and the tubing meets nasa spec, then its would be legal correct?
i can do all the cutting and welding of the cage myself. so id hate to pay 1500-2000 to have someone make one for me.

A soft Yes. Read the rules. Comply with the rules. NASA rules are different that SCCA rules.
Remember CLASS rules supercede general roll cage rules.
