#1013 - R.I.P????
Well guys I just had the worst experience of my life. I was driving in a torrential downpour on the Garden State Parkway and all of a sudden my wheel jerks to the left and we're spinning. I tried to get it back on line but to no avail, the rear end swung out and smashed into the guardrail. I am ok, as is my passenger. A little whiplash is all. The car ended up being ok to drive, despite the back end being totally destroyed. The wing is broken off, the quarter panels are buckled just south of the c-pillars, and the back is mangled. I can't even think about closing the hatch. The driver's seat is also crooked which makes me wonder if the actual body of the car is twisted.
The car was very sluggish, especially on the big cam, probably because the exhaust was totally destroyed. But, what worries me is that the steering feels much heavier. Although, I drove from New Jersey (where the accident happened) all the way back to DC and the car seemed ok. It is a 2001, do you guys think it will be totalled? I hope not but I am worried about the seats/steering. And lastly...Don't even say "How about a JDM front"....not going to happen, although a Mugen wing is definitely on order.

Glad your ok man. Hope your chasis isn't bent or something serious like that. Drive safely everyone.
PS: You drove in the rain? I drove in the rain for the first time in my R last weekend and the tires just weren't stable when I was changing lanes at 75mph.

DAMN!
I'm very sorry to hear that. Glad to hear you and your passenger are okay though.
I don't know...I would say your suspension is either messed up or the frame is bent. That would explain the sluggish steering feel. Get it checked out ASAP! If the adjuster gives you any ****, take it to have the alignment checked. That will tell you everything you need to know about that.
Good luck. I hope to hear that 1013 will be back in good working order soon.

How about putting it into an EK?
Just kidding Ross. I'm sorry to hear about your car and hope there isn't too much frame damage. My buddy got his R 01-0222 back from the body shop and he's happy with it. The driver's side door is new and the frame had to be straighten out a bit. The hood actually had a 1" gap from the fender to the hood and damage to neither panel. The drivers seat moved a couple of inches and the floor pan underneath buckled a bit. Everything worked out all right and the car drivers straight. He even had the R stickers removed and added an OEM bodykit. The car looks sweet!! Hopefully the damage on your car isn't as bad as it seems.
But luckily your car was still driveable and it was only the back end.

If I were you, I'd wish it was totaled, that way you can get a new one. You don't want to drive an ITR that has been in a wreck. No matter what they'll do to it, it'll never feel the same.
That's too bad about your car... But good you guy's are ok...
If the floor has moved all the way up to the drivers seat enough to make your
seat crooked.... Let em total loss the car... if just your weight caused the seat to
twist... no biggie...
Ross,
That is indeed a bummer, but I am glad you and your passenger are o.k. Everything else will work out just fine. In the meantime you should take Mike up on his offer to go for a few laps in his "new" car. That should cheer you up a bit. Maybe Mike can make your car "new" again also.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I would much rather have this R back, as it would be very hard to talk my parents into going halfs on another one. If it ends up being totalled I may very well end up building a hybrid even though I have no clue how. If the body (frame) isn't bent, it's a non-issue, I will revive it soon. But if there is more significant unseen damage it may have to go...but I really want to hold on to it. This may be the perfect opportunity to buy it out of the lease and make it the car I really want.
Regarding the seat...it looks as if the only part of it that's crooked is the actual seat back, and not the butt-cushion. So it may have been my weight pushing it back, hopefully not the floor warping.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you're okay. I recently hit my rear as well.. while spinning.

Pop open your trunk, lift your mats and take a look at the bolts for your reinforcement bar(should be on the floor of your trunk). One of mine gave way and put ripples in my quarter panel. You did exactly what I did (spinning and hitting the rear end into something, in my case a cement wall), but a much higher speed. Glad you are okay, and stay hopeful.

My pops is calling the insurance co. tomorrow, I want to bring it somewhere to get looked at as quickly as possible...I will try to get my paws on a camera somehow. At a glance, the wheels look like they are more or less straight, but the heaviness of the steering does bother me. Here is the thing...even if there is some "frame" or unit-boy damage, will it exceed the book value of the car? I think probably not since it's relatively new...George and I talked about it, and he asked "do you really think you did 18K worth of damage to the car?" I think the answer is no.
edit - I know everyone says "glad youre ok", blah blah...but the fact is that if I could trade a totalled car for an injury, I would. If it meant keeping my car, I could def. deal with a little pain.
