1st to 5th gear = Grind!
I grinded my R twice this weekend when I shifted 1st to 5th. I went up to about 8k RPM and shifted to 5th so I could cruise but I grinded both times attempted this. Why does this happen? Do I HAVE to shift 1-2-3-4-5? I'm pretty sure its ok to shift 1-3-5 etc. I was also sure that I pushed in the clutch pedal all the way when I shifted.
Just let the revs fall a bit, you're at what, 8400 in first trying to go to fifth? At whatever speed you are in first at 8400, fifth wants you to be at like 2-3k RPM. Let it drop to that and it won't grind
It happened to me twice this weekend going 2nd - 5th. I was going to post the same question. But I just figured "Hey, it doesn't like it so I won't do it no more"

Yeah... I really don't know why though. I usually do 2nd to 5th or 3rd to 5th to keep the rpms down.

you know thats bad for the engine? that puts alot of load on the motor, **** gets very hot, before you know it youll be posting how come my motor died?
synchros.??? it use to happen to me. You just gotta know when in your RPM range to shift. Just shift normal from 1-5th and you'll be ok.
Dude! just shift from 1-2-3-4-5! dont be lazy.
I thought it was the other way around. The only reason I skip gears is to try to put less stress on my engine by keeping the RPMs down.
i think it puts more load on your engine because once youre running at a higher rev and the drop it to 5th, the revs will drop immediately causing your car to bog. I think.
Of course it will grind (if you shift too fast). The difference between the gear shaft rotation speed of the 1st and 5th gear is just too high. Your 5th gear Synchros had to work very hard.....
Don't skip gears on the way up on an engine like this. Running at too low of an rpm will do far more damage than running at higher rpms. Bogging = more heat and a chance of metal to metal contact.
If for nothing else, it feels like crap at 3k.

What I have also learned last time on the track: don't skip gears during Downshift either.....If you do, it will grind also...

If you are grinding, try letting the revs rise to an appropriate level before shifting into your desired gear. (Double clutching is a good idea as well).
At most corners I don't have time for Double clutching. I did do simple heel and toe. As long as I don't skip gears, everything is fine (no grinding). There was one corner (end of the straight) where I had to shift from the 4th gear to the 2nd. At this corner I had to shift to the 3rd first, heel and toe -> clutch up and then to the 2nd gear -> heel and toe.
I didn't try 4th -> heel and toe double clutch -> 2nd gear.....
Everyone else was doing the first option.....

I don't mean to sound like an expert or anything, cause I'm not, but I got a lot quicker at double clutching by practicing on the street, so it's pretty natural now. It is always harder though when you're at 100% braking and during turn-in on a squirmy stock seat w/ stock seatbelt
Give it a try, after all it's easier on your synchros

On the street I do practice double clutching when shifting from 3rd to 2nd (as you do at most corners) or when shifting from 5th to 4th on the highway for some acceleration. But on the track there is just not enough time....

If you have enough time to do this, you have enough time to double clutch!
