Default Do I need a D16Z6 ECU

I've posted a few questions on here about my CRX I'm new to this stuff. I have a 89 CRX Hf with a 95 Civic D16Z6 SOHC VTEC and someone told me that I have to have the 95 Civic ECU in my 89 Hf or it will mess up my engine but the engine is in and running stong. So are they stupid or what?

Well if you have a SOHC VTEC motor, your HF ecu is not going to activate VTEC since it was designed to do that. Also it's going to be running the fuel, and spark maps for the HF which are also not ideal for the D16Z6 that's in your car. I would do a search on here about the SOHC VTEC (D16Z6), to see which way you would like to go to activate VTEC. Some of the options are: Install a RPM activated switch, go to ODD-1 and get the D16Z6 ecu, etc..

Do a search. It's obvious that you're not familiar with the full capabilities of that motor.

Oh, I forgot to answer you question.
No they are not stupid. I don't think you'll mess up the motor by running it with the HF ecu, but you won't be able to realize the full potential of the motor with that ecu.

Well he is definetly not using the HF ecu!!

There is no way that the PM8 can support that motor, unless he is redlining at 5500!!

More than likely did you buy the car this way??? It probably has a PM6 si ecu in it.

With the PM8 you get all the exhaust bullshit codes!

I can get the 95 Civic ECU but the Civic was a automatic also would it plug directly into the plug ends on my hf or would I have to ******-rig-it(no offense) What would be the cheapest way to get the VTEC working I'm on a tight budget.

no it will not plug into it, you need to search on odb0 to odb1 conversion for that answer. there is no cheap route for you since you are still using the hf ecu, so, either source a pm6 or something like that and rund an msd switch to activate vtec, but since you may or may not be running a z6 dizzy, then you have to source a p28 an an odb0 -> odb1 conversion harness.

did you buy this crx like this if so what did the previous owner say about the engine?
check your ecu and let us know what is the code you find labeled there... its located in your passenger side under the carpet under the glovebox... and does it look like your distributor got any custom mounts on it..

we need to figure out what obd system you got running in your car now.. so we can better help you...

Before I bought the car it had been sitting in a field for about 3 years. The people I bought it off of dosent know jack squat. The # on the ECU is **37820-PM6-A09** and below that is reads **620-329917 MK** the distributor is out of a D16A6 but I have 2 D16Z6 distributors. The A6/Z6 distributors have the same amount of wires but they are coated two diffrent colors. Can you cut the plugends off & wire the the A6 plugend to the Z6 distributor??

ur running a pm6 (crx si ecu) . since ur already obd and have it running , i would just use a vtec activated switch, fields vtec controller, or vafc. you would just use ur a6 dizzy which im assuming u are still using unless u wired for obd1.

use your pm6(Si) ecu and a V-AFC or send your ecu to hasport and get a zdyne computer. you can get a V-AFC at your local performance retailer. or just use a PW0 or a PR3 you cannot use a P28 or any obd1 ecu unless you use an obd1-obd0 conversion harness. Just stay obd0

dude, a v-afc is a vtec fuel controller that you can buy made by Apex'i. a pw0 and a pr3 are vtec odb0 ecus used for the b16a in 88-91 cars.

just stay obd-0.... you will spend more if you convert to obd-1.. you just need a vtec controller.. but be advised the cost about $100 -$200....

you're car is running strong... and doesnt have anything wrong... and some dumbass goes up to you and says you need a d16z6 ecu (p28) to ran this car... he obviously dont know ****.. i mean if your is running the way you say it is why would even touch it... you just need to add to it to enhance the vtec feature that you got....

o btw(by the way) if you chance your A6 dizzy(distributor) to a Z6 dizzy you will absolute need to change to obd1

And VTEC controller is gonna cost you $200 and up. This whole obd0 - obd1 crap can get pretty complex so I would suggest that if your car is running and you can drive it then don't mess with it. You have a VTEC engine in there but you're not hitting VTEC right now, but who cares anyways, it's still faster then stock.

You're going to spend upwards of $500 to go obd1 after the boomslang harness, p28, TD-042(?) distributor, z6 intake manifold, obd1 injectors, and everything I forgot has been collected and installed.

So go punch that kid in the nuts!

One more thing I drove my d16z6 around for more than 5000 miles before converting to obd1 to pass the smog refs. I had my obd0 dizzy, pm6, and obd0 injectors in there, but it ran beautifully. I wasn't hitting VTEC but the car would still pull after 5,000 rpms. Who knew!
