Default converting from street to track, couple of questions

I have an 89 Civic DX that i want to convert to autocross/road racing. I am gonna go ahead and get the suspension out of the way first. My question mainly is motor. What is a good honda motor to put in for strictly race use? I plan on rebuilding it when I do get one. Should I got Naturally aspirated, or use some kind of boost? VTEC? And where can I get some rules or regulations for SCCA? thanks in advance

Unless you really like spending money, which you will have to in order to be competitive, rebuild the stock motor to stock specs.

Figure out what class you want to race in and build the car accordingly. If you dive in head first, you're going to end up wasting money.

Seriously - you REALLY need to figure out what the rules options are before you do anything. A lot of people familiar with modifications to street cars are shocked to find out that most engine improvements are not allowed in most road racing classes.

You can order rulebooks through http://www.scca.org if you are looking at the SCCA but do some asking around in your area about what options exist.

Autocross/road racing should be a censored phrase. In fact, the forum's title should be changed to "People who know stuff"

But I want to stick around.

Besides it wouldn't be nice to kick out WRXRacer111 either.

To race in the SCCA:

1. Talk to as many people who are into racing as you can... ask as many questions as you can, and don't stop asking. (kind of like what you're doing now)

2. buy a rule book
http://www.sccaclothing.com/cg...tions
You'll want to double check everything you learn eventually. Whether you build or buy, having important information like what exacly does the rollcage have to look like, will become extremely important.

3. To race a CRX/Civic in ITA, I would recommend starting with an SI shell, other wise a Civic STD the one with the 4 spd transmission, not a DX, is in ITC. Basically same type of engine must remain in the engine bay, and the DX would be a bit behind other cars right off the bat.
In Solo2 however it is legal to transplant the whole Si, 88-91 US Spec, running gear... not so in ITA.

4. Do not confuse Solo2 rules with Improved Touring rules, they are not the same, nor are they interchangable.

5. Make sure you either have a good source of income, or plan on taking a couple of years to build the car.

Maybe this will help a little... a link to my "Quest for W2W Racing" Diary.
http://y3k.shacknet.nu:31338/n...f88e1

There's lots of little stuff that you'll need to buy and hoops to jump through... the diary might help to give a little perspective on what I've been going through this year.

Good luck!

agreed... I know "stuff" but knew jack about rr so that's why/how I ended up here... because there is a lot of good info for those eager to learn and I wanted to learn.

From one RR noob to another ... There's some really knowlegeable folks here and you'll get a grasp on who they are the more time you spend here... listen to these people they know what they are talking about... knestis is one of them, do what he says and get a rule book, figure out the classes and specifications on what can an can not be done in each class etc. before you do anything. You've already got the car so that wil dictate somewhat which direction to take but don't modify until you've "slept" on it and done your research.

I am starting with a bit of a disadvantage because I have a motor swap already and that places you in a pretty competitive heavy-hitter class... not a big deal if you are experienced but I am a noob and will probably get spanked for a good long while in said class.... or maybe I'll do fine, I'll have to wait and see. I'm trying to decide now whether to pursue that class or get a second car to start over with so... tread lightly and take it slow would be my advise.

To the original poster- get a rulebook, it will help a LOT. Look up and see what kind of cars are in race results for the class you want to run, that will help give you an idea of what cars are worthwhile for the class. Then do a bit more research and you'll find a lot of racers have webpages that show the price/labor involved to build that type of car. Keep in mind that racecars are inherently bad investments, and that as I think Knestis said... take advantage of someone else's financial loss, and buy a used racecar. Cheaper, will probably be less of a headache if they spent their cash debugging and making it fast.

pick what class you want to race in first, then pick the car, not the other way around.

if you've never done any solo or HPDE type stuff, i hope you are a patient and wealthy person, because it will take a long long time to get any good at this.

have fun.

i think i am going to get a hold of some of those SCCA rulebooks and see where I can go from there. There isn't really anybody local to ask about, most everyone here runs late models on dirt, which could be another option for racing.... ah we'll see thanks.

ooh, i have one of those. set the suspension up and throw some 15x7 on there with azenis. that should be good for top finishes in local sts. for track.......give point-bys. it will be good in the corners, but thats about it. itll run for ever tho.

I see that you're in F'ville - you actually have great resources VERY handy with the Tarheel Sports Car Club - http://www.thscc.com - and the NC Region SCCA - http://ncrscca.com. Some of the nicest, most helpful racing people I've met in 20 years doing this game.

Tarheel does really good criver schools, by the way - sign up for one and maybe I can be your instructor.

See you at the track.
