What do you want to do with it? Do you want a super high reving engine with high compression? But that wont pass smog....
If you have factory cams, or basically stock compression, you wont make power past 8,500 so you might as well just get itr stuff.

If you plan on having like 12+ compression and more than stage 2 cams, then worry about the vave train. Search for that.

so the higher compressoin ratio the less likely u will pass smog? if i got like dual valve springs and retainers and oversized valves would that do anything beside boost the redline? also i was planning on getting skunk2 stage 2 cams, but would switch those out for smog. what would go good with those?

you can use like a skunk2 valve train, and stage 2 cams, but to get the most out of them you will need higher compression. I really dont know if it will pass a normal smog or not, it just all depends on how you build it. If you use a ecu chip, more fuel, higher compression, yes, thats pushing it... you may not pass somg.

My setup is a b18c, I have Intake, 64mm TB, S2 IM, ITR valve springs/retainers, dc header, and exhaust. I have a ecu for smog(usdm p72), and a chipped p28 for performance. I am running stock 10.6 compression, and it will pass smog... Well, it didnt and I think its a problem with my fuel delevery/cat/or my o2. But it will eventually pass. I will be putting my S2 stage1 cams in when it passes. Thats a purdy nice setup, and all the parts have carb stickers.

What im saying is that you should decide if you want a legal engine, or a "race built" engine. In cali its tuff to have both. Every mod that you do there is less of a chance of passing smog, or ref.

Glad to help ya man. Building up an engine is tuff. Its so easy to just decide to go all out and build a high compression, high revving, high horsepower engine, but you really have to decide what you are using it for. If you go all out you loose things like reliability, smog legality, and you cant run pump gas (for the most part). Its hard to run a built engine in cali, especially if its a daily driver.
I have basically decided that my engine is done for the most part, any more and it cant be a cali daily driver, and I dont have the money/time for a track car.
