Hatch Light | How to Fix?
Does any one have a clue how to fix this minor (though annoying) problem? When my hatch is opened the light does not turn on. I tried a fresh, working bulb and double checked to make sure the light switch was set to "on". But, no light when I open the hatch. I can't even turn it on manually.
I keep forgetting/leaving things in my trunk because it's too dark to spot them.
Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

How'd you go about doing that (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm not very electronically savvy, so any explaination/directions would be very helpful.
Depending on where you're located in MD, I could buy you a six pack and you can show me how to do this.

Yeah. I pulled the assembly apart and insepcted the male and female adapters as well as the switch mechansim. I thought maybe it was something as simple as a fuse, but the dome/interior light works.

ewww...not sure then....unless it's not making good contact at the switch itself...or the whole assembly is bad....should be able to find one at ur local salvage yard for pretty cheap

Maybe I can swing by Radioshack and see if they have a voltmeter or something like that. So I can test and see if any power is even emitting from bulb housing.

I'm in carroll county, not far from Hanover, PA if you know where that is. But it's not hard. Basically just cut the wires from the plug leaving a few inches to work with. I can't remember if it matter which is ground or not you'll just have to try it out, but ground one wire, then run the other wire to +12V.
Oh, and this IS a common problem I believe. It has something to do w/the hatch latch I think.

[NOVICE]what color/what does the +12V wire look like (if I'm pulling from the hatch behind the hatch light assembly?
[/NOVICE]
After this mod, does the hatch light stay on all the time? Or only when the rear hatch is open (like the dome light/doors)?
Thanks again.

you'll have to source a new +12V wire. I have an amp, so i just ran it to the power wire from that. If you dont have one, you may need to get out the helms and see what's around. After this mod, the light is only on when you flick the little switch. Do you have a 2 or 4 door (not sure if they have the same style light or not)?

The little switch on the light (white plastic part)? Okay, cool. Hopefully I won't forget to turn the switch off when I'm finished using it.
I have a 2 door, coupe/hatchback.

Have the same problem too. I took my friend's one and put it in my car, still doesn't work. So the problem for some of us is not the assembly itself. I have a '98 btw.

i have the same problem too. new bulb didn't work either so i just forgot about it. i have 99. its like some people have it and some dont, like the crack in the middle of the dash right behind the windshield.
**runs out to car to check and see if he has the notorious crack in the middle on the dash behind the windsheild.**

Kinda glad I'm not the only one with the problem. I'm assuming it has something to do with the latch mechanism on the hatch itself.
