B16A - stopped, whirring noise when trying to start - any ideas?
Hey guys, my b16a was making some rattling noises when revved passed 3.5k, and while I was driving, it stopped. I had it towed to my garage, and when I pulled the valve cover, it looked fine from the top. I'm running Toda B's with Toda cams, Toda valvesprings, and Toda timing belt. The cams were fine, lined up and didn't jump a tooth. I pulled the dizzy and it's fine. I tried doing a compression test, and I got 65psi on cylinder 1, but when I tried to do #2, I got zero and I got a squeaking noise. I pulled the valve cover, and tried to start it again, I saw the cams move for a second then they stopped. Any ideas on what I broke? I haven't pulled the oil pan yet.
I just drained the oil, no shards in the oil or on my magnetic bolt, so I don't think I spun a bearing. I'm able to turn the crank, and the pistons are going up and down in all 4 cylinders. I think the headgasket is shot though, I can see some leakage forming from the tranny side, and I know it's not my vtec solenoid. Would a blown headgasket cause this? I didn't get any smoke coming from the exhaust, and I've only been able to check cylinder 1 for compression, I used to have 190-210 across the board, but cyl 1 is 65. any ideas guys?

nope, timing belt is fine, I'm able to turn the crank and it spins the cams, no teeth lost, I just installed it a month ago, brand new Toda belt.

me neither... they turned, I heard a squealing sound while the starter was cranking, and the cams looked like they were hesitating, but when I hand turn at the crank pulley, there's no problems with their rotation...
45 psi
dude you should have like 200psi on all cylinders
see if the bolts on your cam sprocket came loose
your cams should never stop if your motor is turning over

Yeah the cams bolts are all tight, that's the first thing I checked. I used to have 195 roughly all around. the whole rotating assembly is what stopped when I tried cranking with the starter. But I can still rotate it with the crank pulley like there's nothing wrong. Maybe something wrong with the starter???

Yeah, if it's the entire rotating assembly that hesitates, now it sounds like a starter or battery problem. That's the trouble with diagnosing over the net. I can't actually hear your car from here, I have to understand your descriptions.
What does your battery voltage do while you're cranking the starter? Measure voltage at the battery before & during cranking.

Understandable, I guess I need to check my starter. Battery is brand new, 2 months old, has been reliable since I've gotten my car running, hasn't died on me yet. I can check the voltage.
