from all the smog threads that have been posted, you should search.
or at least give us the status of your car.
list engine mods
maintenance (oil, plugs, cap, rotor, wires)
timing
how long did you warm the car?
and anything else that may be relevent.
the more info you provide, the better you can be helped.

ISOheet mainly contains Isopropyl alcohol. It will help rid of any condensation or water build up in your fuel system which can often cause your HC readings to go high... With water in your fuel system, there will be a higher amount of unburned fuel, thus HC meaning Hydro Carbons.
A bad O2 sensor can really make you fail smog...

Instead of running 89 like I did, you can skip the ISOheet and just run a fresh full tank of 87 octane. MAKE SURE your stock air filter is clean!! Make sure your spark plugs are gapped to 1.3 mm. Be sure to change your O2 sensor...
I got mine here:

Run FRESH fuel (91 octance or 93 whichever is available) prior to retesting. Also, before you retest drive the car hard on the freeway or street to make the CAT really really hot.... arrive at smog place and DO NOT TURN THE CAR OFF... step out the car and let the smog guy do his thing.
Good luck!

I bought an gs that apparently had failed smog 3 times prior to me owning it...well, what I did was run a fuel system additive I got from Pep-Boys for 6 bucks on a 3/4 tank of 92. I made sure to replace my cone filter (cai) and cleaned my injectors. I also checked the timing. And I had no problems passing.
I had failed in my H22/Crx also...I followed the ^^ steps with the jdm h22 and passed with flying colors...I was shocked! I thought I was gonna have to go the illegal route. So just follow those steps and you WILL pass. The stuff is calle Gaurantee Emissions Pass and its in a black/grey pakage..in a little cardboard box. Good luck and keep us posted.

So why would you want to run a lower octane gas, is it so the knock sensor retards the timing? Why not just back off the ignition timing to +14 (spec is +16 +/- 2 degrees)?
Run your car for a long period of time before you get it smogged, The hotter the cattalitic converter gets the more effective it becomes in cleaning the gasses. so drive it around a lot before you take it to the smog check.

If you have the appropriate compression it is. If you put 91 in an LS motor, you wouldn't have enough compression to completely burn all the fuel. I would almost think 89 in a GSR would be optimal for a smog test, as the GSR's 10:1 compression isn't exactly sky high enough to cause bad detanation with lower octanes.
Also, you can't go wrong with 3 bottles of HEET in an 1/8 tank of gas. The alcohol will result in a cooler, cleaner burning mixture that will surely pass smog.
Hope that helps...
