1992-1995 Civic Si (5th Gen Hatchback) - question about STS rules.
I probably know the answer but I thought I would ask you guys. The 1992-1995 Civic Si (5th Gen hatchback) was that available with an optional stereo (aka 1989-1991 Civic Si)?
Reason for this question is someone has been showing to our events with a 1993 Civic Si. The 2nd event of the season he mention putting on an aftermarket clutch in the car. We mentioned to him kindly that it's not legal and he should change it to OEM specs.
Well just this past event I got to drive his car. Clutch felt stiff, but anyway he gutted basically all the stereo components: stereo, wires, speakers, speaker covers, etc. And also removing things (what looks like) the sunroof controls, the emergency sunroof crank, cruise control buttons, some of the plastic in and around the dash, etc...
So basically not STS/STX legal? Would this be considered weenie? Since my next competitor and I are running to the rules, ya know?

Ask him to remove it at the next event or he'll be faced with a protest and a re-classification to somewhere he doesnt want to be

I don't think that it'd be a weenie protest as there is a significant weight savings... this is especially important, imo, as both you and your other main competitor are keeping to the rules.
Back to the other part of your question: As far as I know, all 5th Gen Si's were delivered with cruise, stereo, and all their plastic around the dash
Not sure about AC though... down here in FL it was on all the cars buy maybe not further north?
Christian, who keeps to the rules b/c it makes victory that much sweeter

both the 5th gen civic si and ex came shipped "without" a radio. it was included in the trim packages, but it was dealer installed. you could opt. out of the radio at the time of purchase if you wanted. the ONLY legal way to do this in STS or stock would be to purchase the radio block off plate while retaining the stock wiring and speaker covers. the speakers and head unit could be removed. (maybe 5lbs total)
the same deal with the a/c. my car was actually purchased factory a/c delete. the switches, condensor, hoses, etc. were never installed. regardless, they can be removed in sts.
there is no emergency crank for the sunroof on my car. there is a quarter sized access whole that gets you to the motor and crank. the cruise control is mounted on the steering wheel and cannot be removed. (there is a big black servo motor next to the p/s reservoir and the computer is to the left of the clutch). the moonroof controls are mounted just above the mirror controls. neither can be removed. misc. trim peices should all be intact.
the clutch on a 5th gen civic is just as light as any other civic. it can be made to feel stiffer by adjusting the lever connecting the pedal to the m/c, but you'd notice an incredibly short stroke if that is done.
aside from the clutch and stereo wires, i'd say protesting him (especially at a regional event) for missing plastic would be very lame. you'd definitely want to inform him of his illegality and help motivate him to make the car legal, but none of what he's done will help him enough to be measureable.
75lbs?? i wish!!!

As I said on the Street Touring board, I never have protested at a local event either. I think it's weenie, but then why have rules right?
I mentioned to him politely after the first incursion with his so called aftermarket clutch. GUess I will have to do it again.

Its not a weenie protest in your case though. Those could be important points to keep your 1st place in valvolinecup which is a cash prize.

True
You are right behind me in points. But only 5 drivers showed up yesterday due to the rain, usually 10+ competitors show on a good day, so I would have gotten a maximum point of 6 if I won. Wouldn't have helped anyway.

I'd say to just handle it as politely and tactfully as possible first.
Ask him if he knows about his violations, and suggest he should either change his class, or to conform to the rules for the one which he is currently running in.
If he shows up at the next event, and nothing has changed. I would then discuss protesting with the other competitors, and go from there...
