ProDrive Oil Pump gears are precision machined and ground out of solid steel to insure longer life than inferior quality sintered metal OEM gears. There are many factors that contribute to oil pump failure. Among them are contaminants in the oil, improper installation, unbalanced rotating assembly, etc. Since the pump is mounted to the front of the crank, the crank, rods, pistons and the flywheel/clutch assembly must be precisely balanced. If the assembly is even slightly out of balance, the oil pump gear is going to take a serious beating. A ProDrive billet oil pump gear is much stronger than a stock gear and will withstand high RPM vibration much better than a stock unit.

Q. Why do I want to change my oil pump gear to a ProDrive unit?

A. An unfortunately common side effect of running high horsepower engines that utilize certain OEM components is that you soon find the limitations of those components. Of course, this usually happens at the most unopportune moment, when you need the engine to perform at its best.

One component that has become an increasing problem as horsepower has increased is the OEM oil pump. For some reason, OEM oil pump failure is especially common in Honda Prelude motors but also happens in B16 and B18 motors.
The stock oil pump is made from sintered metal. This is a process where a very fine powdered metal is placed in a mold and and pressed into shape to bind the material together.

ProDrive Oil Pumps are built from a stress proof billet material that has been proven to handle the extreme loads common in high horsepower motors.
If you want to make it across the finish line first, replacing the weak points in your engine with durable ProDrive components is cheap insurance against component failure.

Q. What else can I do to insure the longevity of my oil pump?

A. First, ProDrive Oil Pump Gear user and engine builder Jeremy Lookofsky, recommends the use of a brand new oil pump case when you install the ProDrive gear. A new case will eliminate any out-of-roundness possibly caused by the OEM oil pump gear. A new case will provide good, cheap peace of mind.

Second, if you're building a stroked race motor, Jeremy recommends having all the bottom end parts balanced. A properly balanced bottom end will help to eliminate harmonics, the number one cause of broken oil pump gears.

Finally, make sure all of the screws on the back side of the oil pump case are tight. Use a little red Loctite(R) on the screws when assembling the case. Even a few thousanths of an inch of movement can cause abnormal oil pump wear and securing the screws will prevent them from backing out under vibration which will keep the gear from moving around.
