Default Latest on World Challenge at Sears Point July 2004 (this weekend)

So I heard that Jonathan Meris had an engine fire and may not continue racing this weekend. That is unfortunate. I would think that he would have a spare motor/harnesses, or whatever to make sure that he runs this weekend for sure.

I think WC is running two events this weekend too!

Anyone go to the practice days and have pix and more news?

If only it weren't for those silly 'appearance' rules, cars with minor fire damage could continue...

Well I had to retire early this past weekend because of a car fire (not engine fire). Thanks to the COMPTECH race exhaust that broke (for a 2nd time), the muffler packing first started stringing out of the down tube, then the remaining fiberglass packing forced it's way to the end of the muffler can and caused the down tube to break (busted all allen screws around the can except for the two top allen screws). Consequently, the down tube was held by only the top two allen fasteners and the down tube bent up and pointed towards the fuel tank. The exhaust eventually burned my wiring and fuel lines and the fire made it's way inside the cockpit.
After exiting turn seven my engine died (probably from not getting fuel since my fuel pump wiring was burned-which killed my fuel pump) and as I coasted thru turns 8 and 8A I saw flames next to me! It turned out that my left shoulder harness was on fire which spread on to my seat. At this point, I was trying to three things: 1) slow the car down enough to pull off to the side of the track, 2) release my 5pt. harness to prepare to jump out, and 3) trying to undo the window net. when the car slowed to about 10mph I jumped out and rolled onto the ground, then I realized that the car was still rolling and I had to stop it from rolling onto the K-wall on the side of the track. I finally stopped the car by holding onto the b-pillar while dragging my feet. To make matters worse, I pulled the pin for the fire system then pulled to the t-handle only to find that the t-handle broke-off the attachment rod that was connected to the pull cable to activate the fire bottle!!

After that whole ordeal, I was left with a burnt nose and right eyebrow, and burnt off eyelashes on my right eye. As for the car: a need fuel tank is needed, new seat and harness, fuel lines, brake lines, t-body/tps sensor/ and paint.

all because of another defective COMPTECH race muffler which they did not want to replace.

Jonathan,

that really suck. Glad to hear you escaped with only minor injuries.

I would like to know more info on the comptech header that broke. Where did it break? Did you mount it with just the bolts on the head, or did you use the lower bracket mounts onto the bottom block as well?

hey Andrie,
It wasn't my header, it was the race muffler that broke (twice). The race muffler basically comes off the header and is about 3-4ft. long with a motorcycle muffler/can at the end of the tube. A turn down exhaust tube is connected at the end of the muffler/can by allen screws, which is what broke and redirected my exhaust gases towards my gas tank.

Jonathan,

sorry I brain faded. I don't know why I think it was the header.

Anyway, sorry it happened. hopefully you can try again at Laguna.

Yeah, well my friend, I've been told that COMPTECH products were well built and reliable, but it's evident that their products aren't...at least in my case.

maybe I should forget about Civics, Integras, RSX's, & TSX's and just get a S2k?.

good idea...except maybe I'll go Spec-V and use the QR block and find a way to use the SR-20VE head with the Altima tranny to get the best of 3 worlds (just kidding for all your Nissan nerds)... But if I pioneer this monster it might take me to 2010, by then, the car won't be legal in World Challenge....then it can just sit in my garage NEXT to my previous race car.

JM who?.....Juan Montoya? That would be the only "JM" that would even stand a chance against Auberlen. Billy is just too damn fast.

lol...i meant you mr. meris.
i tip my hat to anyone that can come down here to so cal and rip *** with a 4 door/b16.

you might remember me from lvms back in october 2000.

i ran with tcra red group, then ali and eric asked me to run with you ustcc guys after my race was over, but i was exhausted.
not to mention that the killer bee racing del sol would have had to early apex/crash me when i would have passed him lol.

ah yes, the Derek Daley track at LVMS. I remember that weekend, the ustcc race day was cold and windy. I won that race (I really finished sescond) but Richard Holdner/del sol was DQ'd for punting a couple guys off the track, which left me with 1st place. That was when racing was somewhat affordable. Now, for me at least, I'm racing on a shoestring budget...of a shoestring budget.

I appreciate the props too!

Come say "what's up" if you're gonna be at hyperfest at Infineon this Sept. or at the World Challenge race at Laguna Seca.

If you're talking about the World Challenge race at infineon, then it was Andrew Monterubio's Tech 2 integra (Taz harvey's/DC Sports old Integra). They're really nice people who have been racing in the Series a couple of years now.

You can check out their website at: http://www.tech2motorsports.com/
