Default 94 si rev limit too early. No code! Please help

I just bought a 94 si. As far as I know, nothing has been modded on the car by the previous owner. Last night I tried getting on it just to see what the d16 had in it, and the rev limiter kicks in at around 5500 rpms. From what I understand, I should be able to bring it up to 7200. I am not throwing any codes. Any ideas on what it might be? One of my friends thought it might be the coolant temp. sensor. How would I check? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I need some help. I also let it run tonight, and from what I can tell, the temp gauge isn't as high as it should be, but the cooling fan is coming on, so does that mean I can rule out the thermostat?? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Try unpluging the battery to reset the ecu.

I checked the ecu yesterday, and it is a P28. I will have to wait till tomorrow to disconnect the battery. A little too late to take it for a spin. Thanks for the replies.

What about the VTec you car won't let you go above a certain rev unless Vtec is engaged i'm not sure about when it kicks in on the Si's but from what i've read from other people they say they can't get above a certain rev unless VTec is engaged not sure if i'm wayyyyy off here but another option i guess check your oil pressure if you got a gauge or anything also

are you SURE its the sound of a rev limitier being reached, or does it have more of a sputter to it. If so, then id check all your grounds b/c I had a similiar problem. But if your positive that it's the rev limiter than I'm almost positive that it's a problem associated with Vtec.

I am assuming I would throw a code if it were the vtec solenoid, correct? I checked the oil level, and it is fine. Don't have an oil pressure gauge, I just bought the car. I just don't know what else it could be. Thanks again for all of the help guys.

you can rev the car to the redline without vtec. Infact vtec won't kick in if you are standing still and you can reach redline without vtec. Check your fuel pressure, maybe you having problems with fuel delivery. check your spark plugs and test the coil. It really sounds wrong never heard of it before. Also another thing, was that ECU chipped? Are you reving with the clutch in? I think there is an option you can do with hondata and uberdata called launch control, I think it sets a rev limit with the clutch in.

not related to vtec whatsoever. with or without vtec working your car will still reach redline.

im gonna say inspect distributor cap, rotor and igniter. sounds electrical.

I checked the cap and rotor today, as well as the timing, and plugs, and everything seems to be ok. Any other suggestions? I am just lost. Thanks guys!

maybe see if someone you know has the same ecu and would let you hook it up to your car just to make sure yours isn't malfunctioning.

I am bringing this back for a new reason. I just finished doing a GSR swap in my 94 si, and I am STILL having the same problem. I have been through the whole checklist of things, and the car still won't rev past around 6 or so. The only code I have after the swap is a code 10 (IAT), and I am going to replace the sensor. So far, I have gone through 3 different ecus(now using stock p72), new plug wires, thermostat, plugs, and now a new motor, and I still can't get the bitch to rev all the way up. Any thoughts would be awesome.
