uck. so much build up. how can i safely clean this?

Holy crap theyre coked up something else....soak them in petrol or use carb cleaner

I would try some brake and parts cleaner.Drop them in a metal container and let them soak overnight.

you dont need new ones. just a wire wheel and some parts cleaner, as stated above, and polish them up. Id be more worried about WHY they look like that in the first place.

I just recently disassembled my head, and mine looked something like that. They cleaned up fine, although there was quite a bit of burnt oil left on the face of a few valves, which just could not be removed at all. For the record, prior to said disassembly, I was burning maybe a quart every week and a half.

A machine shop can sandblast them and they will look brand new. Should be about $30.
