Great Leapin' Miatas, Batman!
Marc Schatell asked me if I would host this video clip for him. It's from a SM race at VIR this spring. Please "save as" to preserve bandwidth since I expect this will get popular...

EDIT - link to the video has been changed due to even greater-than-expected bandwidth demands.

wow, I hope everyone was just shaken and not hurt. That'd be a pretty wild ride. What caused it? Did the grey miata just kinda get inside and the guy with the onboard realize that too late or what?
Everyone was fine and Marc's car had suprisingly little damage. The most interesting part was the burn-out mark over the hood where the jumper never lifted off of the throttle...

No biggie. Just your basic Spec Miata race.
The only odd thing about it is that there isn't 15 cars visible out the front window at all times. All of them sideways and hitting each other.
Scott, kidding. Kind of.

If I were to build or buy a Miata as a racecar, ITA is looking a whole lot more attractive than SM. I say that realizing full well I don't have one clue if contact like that shown this video is more frequent in SM than in other club racing classes. Do SCCA or NASA keep stats on this?
you really should just go to ITA. if there is a car in our way, we just punt them out of the way. my personal favorite move is to divebomb somebody on the inside, then use their car as a guardrail ala gran turismo. it really works quite well.
looks like video car lost his tail around the corner and struck the silver miata taking the inside line sending him airborne.
lucky they are both ok! its nearly comical to watch, but i sure as hell bet it wasnt comical to experience

That's what I thought. Thanks. You're a big help. Really.

Travis (tnord) is exaggerating a little. It really isn't that bad. We regularly have 10-15 SMs where I race. Many of the cars don't have a single dent. My street Miata has no more dings than my race Miata, and the race car is almost double the age/mileage as the street car. Travis used to race with us so he knows what I am talking about. It is the same 2 or 3 cars with all the dent/donuts. Give those guys room and you will be fine. I run my Spec Miata in both SM & ITA and the level of close racing isn't all that different in either group. For the most part, I end up running against the same cars (Prod & GT3 cars that also run as ITB/ITC cars).
