Hey...

Ok here is my situation. I am searching for a car... my first car. Anyway I really liked this black RSX-s that only has like 11k on it... So we test drove it, and im 16 so I cant co-sign yet. The payments are going to be too high...

So instead they want me to get this white RSX with the sportshift, which I really am not fancy to, knowing now it isnt a type s, and the transmission. The white car is cheaper...

Black - 22,500
White - 16,500

Im set in a dilema because I would like to have the type s, but another thing I dont like is I dont want the sportshift.
What do you guys think?

 

Your first mistake was test driving the type s (atleast first). Being 16, knowing the price, and added on the insurance and premium fuel, its not a car kids can afford. I would get a base, but dont get the white one with sportshift since its not what you really want. Search around and maybe you can find a black base, or even possibly a higher mile type s for roughly the same price. Dont get hyped up on the first cars you look at. Car shopping takes time, i shopped for about 6 months. Goodluck.

 

i was in the same situation as you. i even looked into rebuilable type-s's. eventually i came to realize no matter what i could afford it and the insurance. i just got an si instead. cheaper then base rsx, same motor(less torque, but can handle higher rpms with hondata), and weigh less(02-03). plus the interior is way nicer imo then any rsx, and they only come in manual. look for an si and just test drive one, thats how i got hooked on it. i got an 02 with 10k for only $14,500

 

if you look hard enough, you can find a brand new si for 16,5. lost of places do summer deals, and there is the fact that they arent selling. i got a 2003 si for 16995 at 2% APR at jim coleman honda in columbia md. also, LOTS of dealers have special internet pricing that is way lower than dealship, probably because they dont have to pay staff. the si msrp is like 21k but most places will ask 18k new, 16 if they are cool/running deals.

sticer price in nj is always $19,080. no matter how many dealers you go to. and all seem to be firm on the price here.

 

take whatever car your getting. it's a gift a LOT of people would love to receive and you're balking because of the color and transmission. be grateful.

 

its not a gift, im paying for it, just under my parents name.

 

Go for the Type S. later you won't want to swap it. I have one and it's nice. If you get a sports shift, you'll kill the tranny quick. depending how you drive that is. Are you buying a brand new one or used? because if it's used I think you can get a better price on the Type S. Good luck with finding a car.

 

insurance is going to kill you. look for an si.

 

get the si. save some money, pay cheap insurance and eventually swap out the motor. insurance is gonna rape u on an rsx.

 

I would go for the si as well unless you are stuck on the rsx's styling. For the price of the used base rsx you can basically get a brand new si.

 

Well there is a white 02 or 03 SI and its 1 grand or 2 more than the white rsx... I just really dont want that tranny in the RSX. I wont be able to afford the type s, we already tried, my parents credit isnt that great so.... im kinda fucked. My payments on the black type s would be 500 plus 500 insurance... bs they were going to have a 12% interest rate to...

 

If I were 16 again, I would have bought a used up junk car... old hatch civic or something and learn to drive better on that before getting a somewhat newer car. There's a reason why teenagers get raped on insurance...

Buy a very cheap car at first and get to know the roads, conditions, how to do certain things... Plus, you won't be as heartbroken if your car gets dented or gets into a fender bender.

Get a better car when you graduate HS, when you're a better driver after 2 years of driving on your belt.

This is so very true. Kal you're a smart man My first car was a truck, and thank god. Point is though like kal said, get to know the roads, get to know how much force will make your wheels spin, how much force will make go sideways (better not to do this on purpose unless you're in a big empty parking lot) and most of all learn what you can expect from other drivers. At 16, getting a type s, even though i do not wish this upon anybody and i dont know you, good chance you will crash the car. The only reason im saying this is because nearly every kid that age ive known to get a fast car has crashed it. I know i just implied a stereotype but thats just what happens. Right now you want a nice car, who doesnt. Highschool especially its all about image and who has a nice car. Garuntee you buddy 4 years from now, and you realize a nice car dont mean squat, its simply a prevaledge. Don't mean to be all negative, im just speaking from experience, also excuse some of my spelling. Goodluck though with your quest.

 

first of all... 22,500 is a rip-off if you ask me for a used type s... I got my new 04 for around 22,500. Try looking on ebay or something for a used type s that is fairly close to you and you could take a drive and have a look at it. I am sure you can find a used type s from a private ownder for around 15-18K... not 22.5

 

Its not like I havent been driving, Ive drove for about a year now and have just gotten able to get a car of my own. But I see what you guys are saying

 

i agree about getting a car to learn on.

you will get in an accident. it is a statistical inevitabilty.

the mechanics you learn are priceless. if you crash it, get another one. $1000/month is insane. you should be saving that money for college. if not college, a home when you turn 18. nobody CARES what you drive. if the people you run with are into that sort of thing, you might want to look for different people.

if you parents have iffy credit and you DO buy the car. if you miss payments, that reflects on them. that stuff takes a long time to fall off a credit report.

look for something you can EASILY afford. cars are BAD investments anyway.

 

i'd have to agree with getting a older used car as your first car. this way if small things go wrong you'll learn to fix them and begin to understand the dynamics of driving and fixing a car. since their shouldn't be anything wrong with an 02-04 rsx or si.

 

get a rebuilt rsx, i got my type s for 12 g's, with oem kit, tint, and wings west r wing, and fog lights =D
