Am I being offered a fair price (95 Del Sol)?
Hey all-
I am being offered a fair price for a 95 Del Sol?
It is at least the Si model (Targa top), and I believe it is the VTEC (At least VTEC is across the top of the engine). 1995, 69,52x miles. All windows, mirrors, etc work fine, all seals around doors and top appear to be in good shape. A couple minor scratches in the paint (White car) It has a modded intake with an OBX filter at the end, not sure what kind it is (I'm a mod n00b), and Euro style aftermarket taillights.
Car drives really nice, they have an excellent radio/cd changer in (Crap speakers and needs an amp though), and the carpet needs to be either reseated or replaced on the passenger side (It's pulled away from where it meets the door sill).
The price they want is $5700 US. I've run a Carfax report and it comes up absolutely clean (It's original owner was a corporate lease, then the second owner is the co-worker that has it for sale.)
Fair?

Offer $4500 if they give you the stock taillights with it, or $4300 with the Euro's. Settle around $4800 with stock lights, or $4500 with euro's. Blue book says $4865 private party/excellent condition.
1 owner? Clean? Still a little high from what jolt-tsp said, but make sure it is MINT. Nothing wrong at all. Perfect interior. Never been bondoed, no rust. If its like that it might be worth the 5700 for the peice of mind knowing your car is mint.
Hrm. I think the loan they have on it is at $5200, I don't think I can get it down below that. Am I correct in assuming that it is the 160 hp VTEC, as opposed to the 120 hp engine in the non VTEC Si?
I'll probably end up buying it, I've got some money coming in from an inheritance, so the extra $ isn't a huge thing. It's in good shape mechanically, new tires, recent new brakes. I'll get all the fluids flushed and changed, and then start searching through the archives for stuff to do to it. :D

So it's the 120 HP? Hrm...that's gonna be trickier to get to 200 without a swap. Not really looking to race/drag, but definitely want it to move when I step on the gas.

Mechanically and body wise it looks mint (Other than the noted couple of very minor scratches). Interior is pretty good, the covering at the interior door handle, driver side is bubbled slightly, and one screw is missing from the lid over the ashtray. The carpet is intact, but pulled away from the door frame on the passenger interior side. (Doesn't look torn, just looks like it wasn't put back properly when they installed the CD changer in the trunk.)
How can I tell what kind of an intake it has on it? It's just a tube leading away from the engine with an OBX filter on the end. Doesn't look like it has any input from the outside at all, so does that make it a warm air intake?

What would be a more realistic expectation?
I was thinking for sure doing the exhaust, headers, possibly replacing the air intake that is currently on (There's no ducting to the outside, so I'm assuming it's not a CAI), or a turbo.
Like I said, I'm not planning on racing/dragging, but I definitely want some move to it.

Yeah good idea! Why doesn't everyone in the world just buy an EG or EK, then we can all drive the same car?
Hell man I want a Del Sol. It would be a fun car to make it fast.

How many miles does the engine have? Or do you know? Personally I like Del Sols. I think that they are a great car, even though they have gotton a bad rep through the years. Its sounds like a pretty good deal, but its all about what you want. IMO I would probably buy it as long as the engine didnt have a million miles on it, and like you said before, it drives well. I do think that they are asking a little too much for it, so I would try and talk em down to a more reasonable price.
If your not looking for a drag/race type car, then just slap a header, catback, and a few other minor bolt-on goodies, and IMO thats all the power you'll need to cruise around town, and still be able to get on it when you want.

For a little extra $$ you could buy mine if you're up for the drive to Cali.
Without the Racing Harts I think they'll be gone today. If you're interested see the link in my sig. for more info and pictures.

The car has ~ 69,500 original miles. Pretty low for a 95. The Carfax says it was a corporate lease vehicle originally, and the last 3 years it's been owned by my co-workers daughter (And mostly sitting in a garage the last year or so.)
Oh, and shpoo, I love the look of your Sol, but half the reason that I want to get this is to play with it myself, not get one already built :D. I had a 1997 Chevy Cav that was my daily driver, and I was going to get a new Mazda to replace it, and start modifying the Chevy. Well, I got in an accident and the damage totaled the Chevy, so this is the replacement for that.
Sigh, this is a slippery slope, isn't it? I've been checking out prices for a B16A2 swap all morning.

why B16A2(96-97 Del Sol VTEC, 99-00 Civic Si) ? why not B16A3 (94-95 Del Sol VTEC) or B16A (SiR) or B16A1 (SiR)

Mostly ignorance, I guess. I've been doing searches through the forums (Not a very intuitive search function, btw), and I didn't see anything about an A3. I want it to be a straight up swap, so I suppose the A3 would fit.
What's a good reference site for prices on engines?
Aodhan
(Do I get extra points for admitting lack of knowledge?
)

you kiddin me dude? 5700! yeah right. the car would be worth somewhere near that price if it was stock. modifying it only lowers its value. it does have low miles but cmon it has altezzas. 4000 max

I've never heard before that modding a car LOWERS it's value. It does not add to the value, but it does not lower it.
