Default LAPD to Test Gun That Immobilizes Cars via Radio Waves

http://www.lacar.com/modules.p...d=277

"It works on most cars built in the past 10 years, because their engines are controlled by computer chips," said Dr Giri. "If we can disrupt the computer, we can stop the car."

It sounds like a good idea, but i think it could be too easily misused.

Anything that disrupts a vehicle or driver, IE killing a cars engine, at high speed can result in fatal crashes or losing control of your car. I don't know when or if this ever will be used, because think about it, if you are running from the police at high speed, and they disable your electronic system, there goes your airbags, power steering, not to mention wheel lock, and you crash, there is a lawsuit and a half. So, i don't know what others think about this, but i personally think it will be a very long time before they can use such devices.

Now, on another note, when auto drive comes fully into play, and police can tap into your car's auto drive and stop the vehicle on the side of the road or turn it around like in minority report, this i feel will be the next step.

Well, i know cops can't drive for ****, and it doesn't always end up in a crash. But, think about it, this is just making it easier for someone to sue because of technology. Don't we have enough people who sue for stupid **** already? We don't need to add to the list.

Actually I would be more worried about my brain that has to be one hell of an EMI.

Bad idea in my opinion.

these have actually been around for a few years. There was even a good write-up on one of the news sites I read (might have been BBC.. i forget) where one eletrical engineer built one. It wasn't that hard, and could be made at home to fit into a unit the size of a suite case. I believe the equivilent power the thing products (because the RF beam is directed into a single direction) was that of a smaller radio station. It also has other potential uses for abuse go beyond just being able to foul up a car's ECU... it can interfer with pace makers, electronic equipment in hospitals, etc. IIRC the guy said the home made one he made had an effective range of something like 100 yards or so.

I've heard microwaves rigged to run with the door open can do this from close range. I'm thinking what if you just wrap the ecu in aluminum foil? Also if we had autodrive like in minority report they could just make it so we couldn't speed at all.
