aluminum welding ?
I plan on using a 3/8" od piece of aluminum tubing
to replace the brake booster vacuum port on an itr im.
i have an oxy/acetelyne torch. Question is what flux
and solder should i get?
Or should i use jb weld? I'm open to other ideas.
TIA

in order to properly build that and get a good seal you will need to use a TIG or MIG welding machine
you cannot braze aluminum, uyou can only "hot bond it" pretty much solderring it, but it is very weak
and another why would you want to even attempt to JB weld it together? what happens when the intake mani breaks while you have the engine running and you get an immediate flow of air?
something to ponder on

Can any welding shop perform this?
I want the best seal possible.
I braze copper at work.
I figured i could fill in the gaps but i didn't know how it would hold up.
JB weld was another option. Never dealt with it.
The people i work with said it would work.
I searched ht and found that there were more bad experiences with it than good.
Thanks for the quick reply.

well what you have brought up thinking will work can work if s=done properly but will not be strong in any way shape or form and you will eventually have problems with a leaky manifold.
just take it to a competent welder and he can do whatever you want dome welding wise

Your nuts, just thread the hole and use a normal brass barbed fitting with teflon tape. It wont leak and wont take that long to do yourself either. Just dont forget to clean out the shavings before you put it back on.

That was my first idea. I got 1/8" and 1/4" brass fittings from home depot. I used a 1/8" npt tap and the threads got all fucked up. If i use a 1/4" tap there will be next to nothing left. I created this thread after that fell through. I think dirtyd463 has the best solution. Thanks for your input.

I read exactly what he wants to do and I dont see any good reason for it. Why risk welding a weak aluminum fittint when you can thread one in with no problem. I do happen to know what is going on and also that a brass fitting is going to be a stonger, quicker solution, with less potential for a bad seal (contaminated weld if case your too slow).
You have no idea of what I do and dont understand. This type of **** reminds me why I rarely visit this site anymore.
please do not post if all you intend to do is be an *** and you arent going to try to help with the subject at hand.

my intentions were not to be an ***, I was just stating that it would be smarter to get it welded properly
I am a government certifiesd welder...my solution to every problem is to weld it
I am just saying pretty much the same thing he is, hte IM is too thin to get a proper thread in order to install a barbed fitting...but honestly, if he could installa barbed fitting it would probably have just as good of a seal as it would be welded
but since he has not been sucessful at tapping the hole he really has no choice but to weld it now
he needs to be shure that he needs to find a decent welder because that is a thin piece of aluminum to weld
