You can replace your factory speakers with better ones, but you will not necessarily get a better sound. Remember, garbage in = garbage out. Your best bet would be to replace the OEM deck with an aftermarket one that has good "expanding" capabilities if you want to add, say, a cd changer, or amps (need pre-outs), etc.....
Just my suggestion. I always go with better electronics (i.e. head unit/amps) than speakers. They will always make any speaker sound better regardless.

Why not change the cd player first?
i had OEM speakers, they sounded bad, then got a sony Xplod deck, the sound improved BIG TIME, but in the long term, i changed the speakers too.
But instead of getting the speakers, i would get a deck first.
Just my opinion

yes. you just need a line out converter and run RCA's to the amp.

sort of back from the dead, but what if you run a small amp to new speakers, like a 30 watt amp powering 2 speakers, would it make a noticable difference?

30 watts is extremely small, with two speakers its going to put out 15 watts per speaker. If that is the RMS rating on the amp, its gonna be much better then stock. If 30 watt max, that is one shitty amp. (make sure its a 2 channel amp)
