Default 96 Accord Speed Sensor Problems

I replaced the speed sensor and all was great for about a minute of driving and it stopped working again.? The car was shifting perfectly and then the check engine light came on and it began slipping and falling out of gear again. Could it be the wiring leading to the sensor? Would that give you a bad code also? Could it be the computer? My Haynes manual has about six lines about the sensor which essentially informed me that the sensor is located somewhere in the engine compartment...Please help!!

I had a computer check run on it that came back with a vehicle speed sensor code (17). So, I replaced the vss. Do you think it is something else? Thanks for the reply.

Thanks Farroutt,

The codes that came up were 17 and 54. Yes it is an automatic. The drive light is not blinking. I had a mechanic look at it yesterday and he told me the tranny was gone because the fluid wasn't bright red. I had the transmission flushed about three weeks ago and the fluid is now a deep purple color. He didn't run any type of diagnostics and said that when a vss goes out, it simply affects the gears from shifting. He said with the gears slipping, and now not engaging at all, that it must be the clutches are gone and the transmission must be replaced. I still think that it could be an electrical issue because when the car was reading the vss it ran perfect, am I wrong? Thanks again.
