as for the radar. i believe your detector sends out a signal which bounces off the police radar and back to your detector. i may be wrong...

Radar is a wide around the police car while laser is what he point at he gets. I've seen cops with rade get 3 cars all at once because the machine just read all the cars as they passed. Radar detectors that do laser too will work like this. If your in or near range of radar it will read it. If he shoots you are someone near enough infront or behind you the laser detector will go off.
