Default Wideband O2 - ECU Alternative?

I'm wanting to know if you can run a wideband O2 to the ECU without any sort of box in bewteen? I was told the PLX box controls the O2 heaters and the wideband O2 will go out quickly without it. PLX sells the M-250 unit that includes the wideband O2 , 8ft cable, and box w/o display for $300. From them, just the wideband O2 is $60. I've heard you can get a wideband O2 for $40 elsewhere. Does anyone know of anyone that makes a cheaper box so the wideband O2 will last and be able to send the 0-5V signal from it to run to the ECU?

All I want is for the wideband to send the signal to the ECU and not burn up.

I kind of don't understand your question. From what I'm reading you want to connect a wideband 02 SENSOR to your stock 02 harness? Clarify I might be able to help. Also what exactly are you trying to accomplish.

I think he is speaking of the PLX's narrowband output feature??

If not.... widebands are 5 v sensors... opposed to the OEM 1 volt sensor... so there is no way to just directly connect it/

No no no. Sorry guys. I'll try to explain better. This is for a programable ECU program like Hondata.

Lets say your're running Hondata. You run the 0-5V signal wire from the PLX box to the ECU correct? Thats what I'm talking about. I don't care about the narrowband signal. I want to find a better (cheaper) way to get the 0-5V signal to the ECU. The ECU is running off Hondata, so the 0-5V is fine.

I want to bypass the O2 controller if possible and just wire the wideband signal wire straight to the ECU at the O2 signal input. Or find a cheaper O2 controller.

you can't. the controller is necessary to control the warming up of the o2 sensor. unless you attempt to hook the heater wiring up to an ignition voltage source, and a switch, and then turn it on/off while driving, and hope to not fry it

This won't even work. "Wideband" sensors use a Nernst cell, in which the exhaust gas is sampled. The pressure and/or temperature inside is kept constant to allow it to function over a wide range of temperature and a/f ratios. The electronics that control this are complicated, hence controllers like the TechEdge which have 100's of components and a number of ICs, as well as an EEPROM.

The only thing you MIGHT be able to do is to get a VX OBD1 ecu (I assume this exists?!) and chip it. This ecu uses a wideband sensor (though the particular one is hard to find now and new will cost you $150+) so it would have a built in controller.

However, this could take you months/years to figure out, unless someone VERY knowledgeable in ecu hacking helps you. (This person is not me.)

If someone wouldn't mind hosting a 250kB file, I have a .pdf on the operation of Honda's Wideband O2 sensor (and troubleshooting) - let me know.

Ok, so I for sure need the O2 controller. Does anyone know of where to get one cheap instead of paying $300? I don't need the display.

the $300 isnt for the controller. is for the controller, display and the sensor.

The wideband conteroller box is needed because the o2 sensor don't give you a 0-5v signal, it is current driven and the signal must be changed to 0-5v or 0-1v for the ecu to read it.

so it is NOT possible to run a wideband o2 sensor on a stock ecu until the ecu itself has the circuit to drive and read a wideband sensor...

hondata only reads the 0-5v signal so you need the box also to change the current signal from the sensor into a 0-5v signal for the ecu...

only a stock ecu that can use a wideband sensor and has the heater circuit in it can drive a wideband sensor direct.

Are you planning on tunning you hondata yourself?

I dont think Ive ever heard of a wideband that doesnt require its own controller - at least in an aftermarket sense.

Some aftermarket widebands have a 0-1v output and that STILL wont work with the stock ECU. I've been told the calibration is different and something like the narrow band O2s dont really work on 0-1v its more like .5-1.0v. Chris can you confirm/deny that?

I wasn't sure about the controller, so I asked. You answered my question. Thanks guys

Yes, I'm tuning the Hondata myself and very confident I'll be able to.
