SOHC VETC turbo???
over the past few months i have been thinking about getting a gsr swap for my ek coupe, most people would say hands down go for it, but my friends tell me to save the cash, and build a sohc turbo beast. they all bring up stories about their first sohc's and how a couple of them ran 12's @ 18lbs of boost. my question is; should i swap in a gsr, or should i take my extra d16y8 and rebuild it in to a forced induced monster??? feedback please...
If I had it to do over again and wasn't going to go crazy. I would start with a boosted stock D series to learn how a boosted car runs and such and the maintenance. That way if you mess up a motor, its a cheap one. Then when you are comfortable swap in a built D. Only reason I would use a b series is for big power or if I had an integra or a got a good deal on an LS motor.

Totally depens on your goals for you car. If you want to run 12's, it can be done with the SOHC and for pretty cheap. 11's have been done, but are very rare.

i would say go with the boosted d motor. get your self a good used drag kit which can be had for about 1800 or less. dont waste your time on a greddy kit cus there isnt that much room for upgrade

I agree with your agreeing. D series engines are cheap and parts costs are still below that of b series. If you want more fun from your d series build it up. if its a sohc you will have traditionally more even torque/hp figures.

When I bought my 95 EX coupe I decided to turbo my d16z6 because the motor was already in my car. I also figured I could just learn on this motor because all the parts were cheap. I wouldn't want to swap a GSR in my car and then blow it up. I already blew one tranny up and my buddy sold me another Z6 tranny for $40... let's see a b-series guy get a tranny with no grinds for that much lol. I decided to do a custom turbo kit and ended up spending $1100, so that's not too much out of my pocket.
I am very happy with how everything turned out... 216whp/181wtq @ 10 psi, 13.3 @102 (slicks), 13.9 @ 102 (drag radials) and this was my first time at the drag strip. I should have no problems getting 12's next time at the track with a little more boost and little less tire pressure in the slicks. My plans right now are to get another Z6 motor and throw some rods/pistons in that and then see how far I can push the stock Z6. When the stock Z6 blows I will have the built shortblock ready and I should have no problems getting about 300whp out of my built d-series. I will have a 300whp turbo car for less than what a GSR swap would have cost me. I also like being the underdog too and shutting up those b-series guys that talk ****.

if your y8 is healthy, boost away. it will prove to be an invaluable learning experience, and a great starting point should you want to build the motor

When I first got my civic, i wanted a gsr swap so bad. then I realized it was to much and couldn't afford it. then I started looking at boost. right now, I have all my parts for my setup, except fuel management, and I am at like $700. then i need dp, charge pipes and tuned. They money I saved, can go towards some suzuki pistons and eagle rods and then boost to like 17psi and stomp gsr's. I have seen the light. turbo sohc.

i'd go with the d series turbo. i've had a b16 and h22 and i still like how the d series turbo cars i've ridden pull which is why i just sold my h22 and now crossing back over to my old z6 and putting a turbo kit on it.
I am in the same boat dude. I have a 94 coupe and just ran a compression test and pulled 160 across the board. Car has 140k on it, so it runs nice and is very healthy. I would love to go boost but am still questioning whether I should put some forged pistons and rods in it so I can boost 10-15psi tuned. We will see, any opinions would be cool also. Good luck BlackStealthSleeper!!!!
