New Del Sol Owner...Nu B questions
Hey I picked up my first honda today, Its a 95 SOL w/ a D16Z6
I'm lovin it. Only one Problem She's bone stock...
I put 70 miles on her just today cruising in her...
I'm planning on moding her out...I have an overall "Plan". I'd like her to be a street cruiser you know a sat night on the beach ya da ya da ya da. Anyway first thing I'm doing tomorrow is flushing the motor out. Oil and Water Change. I'm going to use 5w30 Moble Synthetic with a Fram Xtra guard filter. We'll go from there I guess...
I have a few Questions for everyone....
What should I be looking for as far as PRE-mods. Compression test? Plug Change? Wire Change?
What Mods Should I Do for the Best Bang For my Buck? I don't want to put headers on it yet as I would like to do a turbo kit later on and it would be a waste right now.
Also I'm Thinking of building up a motor (internals) to put into the car more of a long term plan, should I build up a D16, or Deal with the rewire for a B16 or B18? I'm planning on doing the standard bolt ons to the engine thats in the car so I'm thinking that it would be best to just go with a D16 and Just use the mods that I'll already have when the motor is done.
I've been doing a lot of reading and have learned that I have a lot to learn...I'm Willing to learn so if you guys have some good reading that be great.
Thanks For your Time
Joe

theres alot of options you could consider.
I'd first do a little search...
How many miles does your sol have? Low milage, I would turbo the D.
Higher milage I would swap it with a b-series.

really, there is almost NO wires that you need to do with a b-series swap. With mine, I had to run 4 wires, and that is with the GSR, which has a few more wires because the intake manifold is weird.
I would consider doing suspension and brakes first.
As far as things to do since now you have a new car, change the brake fluid, clutch fluid, coolant, oil, and tranny fluid. Who knows when the last owner did any of those things.

My best advice would be to get yourself a helms manual. Ask anybody on this site, they will all tell you that it is a valuable book, full of information. If you truly want to learn about your car you need to own one. As for what to do (turbo/NA) I would suggest swapping the motor, assuming you want to gain that speed. If you want to get a little more serious I suggest looking into a swap, altho if your going to do that you hafta be serious, and understand exactly what you want to do with your car.
good choice in the sol -_-
good choice in the sol -_-
I'd suggest if it has under 100K miles, save up for a turbo kit, clutch, lsd, full exhaust, and motor rebuild kit. If it was tuned correctly, you could be MUCH faster than a b series swap and get great gas mileage.
I had a turbo d16z6 in my 1995 Si and loved it.. but my g/f blew it and now im b18b1 powered.. have to say I love not worrying if there is anything wrong with my setup.. stock reliability..
My b18b1 pulls harder than my 5psi z6 did.. and gets much better gas milage.. (but I know, tuning a turbo kit right will leave the gas milage stock or better...)
My sol is a little banged up and needs parts, but I love driving it.. every minute of it.. if you need to sell any stock parts, hit me up!

I have 120k Miles on it right now but the engine sounds mint and is just as clean its just showing its age (pits on the intake) but other then that she sounds brand new.
I guess one of my questions is lets say I decide to go for a swap will any performance parts that i put onto my D16 fit on a B18? CIA, Intake Manafold, or even the turbo?
I'm trying to come up with a long term plan for not buying parts 4 times, there expensive enough the first time around
90civicb
If I start changing out my front end I'll let you know, what parts are you looking for specifically?
I'm planing on painting it this fall (first sign of snow) so I might put a body kit on it at the same time I'll have most of the front end and possibly fenders if money allows...I'm Thinkin Graphite Gray...or Pearl Black...
PS. Thanks for all the responces, I'm sure I'll be lurking in this forum for a long time to come

i'd swap if i were you..i have a d16z6 with many bolt ons and even some head work and now i wish i would have just waited saved up my money and swapped i know it is possible to build and make a d16 fast "really fast" but i don't have the time or money to do everything you need to do. and saving up and just dropping in a GSR motor will save you time and money in the long run if you really want to make anything out of this car. my .02

Hey welcome to the Sol World. If you're thinking of building up your stock motor, in all honesty just turbo. D series do not gain a lot of power. So it's best to just turbo a D motor. Me personally I would swap a obd1 gsr motor. It's only a few hundred more than a 2nd generation b16. Good luck to you, man. Oh yeah, you might want to look into getting better piping first.
Hey I know this is gona sound stupid but whats the Specs on a GSR and what do they come out of?
and what would I look for in the motor I'll probibly hit up a Junk Yard to see what they have be nice to know what i'm looking for (and hopfully they don't know what they have)
Thanks

I like to follow the same procedure upon purchasing any car. First buy a Helm's manual, (or FSM for that particular brand/model). Second thing I check out is the brakes. The greatest super-duper titanium built engine dual ballbearing T100 turbo with JDM quintuple adjustable coil-overs won't do you a damn bit of good if you rear end the person in front of you. So check your pads and rotors and I'm sure just about any car could use a good brake fluid flush. Always neglected. If you plan on upgrading the brakes do it now. It's the first thing I think everyone should do. Nothing fancy just a nice set of pads, plain rotors (no need for slotted, x-drilled or any other type of defacing to the rotors) and again fresh brake fluid.
Do some research on the car. Find out what kind of service records the car has. What's been done, where it's been worked on etc... Maybe it still has some outstanding recalls that needs to be done. Whens the last time the fluids have been changed (oil, tranny, coolant etc...) Whens the last time a tune-up has been done plugs/rotor/cap/wires? Has there ever been a timing belt service done? These can run from 400-700 dollars and more. So plan ahead. If you have 90-105,000 miles or more and it hasn't been done, you NEED this done. That fully built motor won't amount to a hill of beans when your timing belt snaps.
Check over the suspension make sure all the bolt's are there, everything's tight. If you plan on upgrading suspension that would be the next thing I would look at. Just remember those new Ground Control Coilover's or Eibach springs probably wont' do **** for you on 100,000 mile stock struts. You can get a really well set-up suspension for a lot less then you think. Just search around. Compression test and leak down tests are key to get a good idea of what your are working with.
Once you've taken care of all this and the car is running great THEN and ONLY THEN should you start thinking about more power. Make yourself and plan and try and stick to it best you can. Don't need to waste more money then you need ya know? Don't buy a I/H for a D-series motor if you plan on switching to a b-Series or turboing it or both ya know? Just because you find one for $100 on eBay or something.
Not trying to scare you off or anything just giving you a heads up. I think if everyone followed a general philosophy like this and took better care of there cars, there'd be a lot less problems arising. To many people get over excited and rush into things. I've seen to many hack jobs. So good luck and hopefully some of this sinks in.
P.S. Good choice on the Mobil 1 5W30. I am a big fan of it. Instead of the FRAM, maybe try heading to your local Honda dealer and asking for a 15400-PLM-A01 (oil filter) and a 94019-14000 (drain plug washer). I think you'll be glad you did.

Whats the best way to condition the rubber seals for the roof and doors on a del sol, what should I use on them to keep them from cracking?

Haha, nope. I have a white CRX with an awesome industrial camo pattern...err...a few good rust spots. Haha.
It's parked at my garage right now not running cuz something mysterious is going on, but that's all in another thread so no hi-jack. Ha.
I'm hoping to have my own sol within a few weeks...after I get home from this damn job in NH...being stuck in a hotel w/no car is not fun.

lol wtf? A stock LS pulls harder than a z6 at 5 psi? You must not have been a good driver. An LS in a del sol with the usual I/H/E would be a mid to low 15 second car. turbo del sol at 5 psi I used to run 14.8s

Wow.. good for you.. not every turbo sohc makes it in to the high 14s.. I don't think I would be happy with a 14.8 compared to a 15.2... that could go either way depending on the next run.. why don't you compare something better than 4/10ths of a second..
BTW, when I say pulls, I don't just mean 1/4 mile.. I mean regular driving..
And now that Im running a b18, I can say this.. let me spend $2000 on a turbo kit and see what happens.... this engine ran a 13.7 turbo'd at 5psi in a 1994 integra...

Also I'm Thinking of building up a motor (internals) to put into the car more of a long term plan, should I build up a D16, or Deal with the rewire for a B16 or B18? its already wired up for vtec so a b-series swap would bolt right up.

8 psi with the greddy kit I went 14.1@100
10 psi tuned would have been able to go mid 13s...and still let me spend what u spent on ur motor....So what you got the ls right that was what...1000? ok so let me buy a sohc long block for 300$ and do a piston/rod combo for the rest of the price difference. Then turbo the sohc again the ls....I guarentee the sohc will be faster. Stock sohc sleeves have already been proven to 300 whp. Don't get me started with the dohc vs sohc...stock for stock sure the ls will be a better platform thats why I'm probably going to do an LS turbo when I fix my del sols front end.

Im not downing a sohc turbo, im simply saying that for the price, my ls is both more reliable, and economical.. But either way.. to each his own..
Just for the record, you can't build an SOHC turbo monster for the price I paid for my engine.. It was complete down to the last bolt and only cost me $865...
Enough thread hijacking.. Del sols are sweet.. no matter what you decide to do.
