Default Just got a major oil leak, neet some advice!

Ok, so I drive back home today, a few cities long along 101(bay area).
On the way my car starts to overheat,
gets temp goes up and down till I get home

so i get home and pop the hood to check the coolant,
open radiator cap, coolant is topped off, reserve is alittle lower than max.

so wtf,
then I look around and see some oil splatter behind the valve cover, some pooling imbetween runners on IM, and splatter here and there...
then I look down under the IM and ... ****!! ******* oil sprayed EVERYWHERE,
steering stuff soaked, shift linkage soaked... back of engine soaked.

very hard to tell where its leaking from.
oil level is low, but was at half the other day(didnt add more cuz I was going to change it soon anyways).

now I dont think its the headgasket,
motors only been in for a week or so, had lots of broken sensors n stuff on it that i replaced.
Guy I bought it from suggested maybe the pcv valve or oil vapor separator(somethingorother), or oil filter(cuz i never changed the filter from wut was on there), or oil pressure regulator, or valve cover leakage.

leaning towards pcv, valve cover, or filter..

just wanted to know what you guys think??
he tried to explain to me what the pcv did.. but I "Kletus'ed out" on him, heh.

was the hose that comes off your valve cover to your intake still connected. That happened to me with oil splatered all over the place and the hose just came off.

the oil splatter that is above the IM is on the other side of the valve cover,
the side with the breather hose is clean

check your oil pressure sending unit maybe? maybe your valve cover came loose or maybe your headgasket blew?

BIG important question,
why would my car be overheating if I was losing oil!?!? coolant is fine, so wtf??

no lubrication = more frictinon.....friction = heat

just checked my oil level,
its at like 40%
and as you probably know, even if it was at 0% it'd still have lots of oil in there.

also looked at the pcv,
the hoses looked just fine, BUT looking at the upper splatter pattern,
and the pooling of oil on the pcv itself, its highly likely that it could be the culprit.

now when the pcv goes bad, but the hosing stays fine/intact,
can it actually squirt oil out like this???

gotten any ideas to where the leak is? if its on the back of the block, look for a loose connection of some sort... that big black box on the back (not on the firewall) holds oil or someting or another... check that for being loose. other than that, check the oil filter and gasket... good luck....... and remember that you have a warranty!!

wow, first things first, change the oil filter that is on there. I would do that before anything. you don't know how long its been on there and chunks of the filter could clog your oil passages.

Change your oil and top it off. I would be weary of driving on 40% of oil. Second, clean off your engine bay with simple green and replace the pcv valve.

Start your car up and check for leaks. If you can't find it, drive around for 10 minutes and check again.

Do that for a while and if you can't find it, then you are good.

BTW did you bleed your coolant?

thanks, good advice.

****... i hope the filter didnt do that.
if I take it off can I tell if it broke apart? guess i'd just need to cut it open?

was hoping that black thin on the back of the block didnt carry oil,
cuz if its leaking. it'd be afucking BITCH to fix without pulling the motor.

edit: didnt bleed my coolant recently, but I did when I first installed the motor.

yeah, looks like b cruz got the right idea...

clean up the area first, and change the pcv and oil filter. top off the fluid and drive around again, just to see exactly where the oil is drippin' from...

heh.. ok.. i think i figured it out..

i put in a new pcv, new filter, changed the oil,
added some "custom gaskets" to the pcv(rubber bands, heh).

then i noticed.. the ******* valve cover breather tube was kinked.
argh... I suppose the backpressure caused the pcv to come unsealed.

so I replaced that hose, and drove around,
checked periodically, no oil leakage.

so I start giving it some revs..
and it starts overheating
pop the hood and let it idle, heat goes up'n down, but at idle it mostly stayed normal.
fan comes on.

but driving home if I give it too many revs it'll start overheating.

checked coolant level, its topped off, reserve tank is good.
so I open the bleeder while it idles, coolant squirts out ,but I see no bubbles,
watched it for a while, then the fan comes on and coolant stops squirtin..
tried toping off again, didnt want anymore.

and thats where i'm at..

It only overheats when you rev it too much? I could be many things but start off with the cheap fixes first. Check to see if the thermostat is opening by feeling the lower hose to see if it is hot or cold. Hot= opening, cold=not opening. If thats not it change your radiator cap. If that doesnt work then I would look at the water pump, it could be seized. Or your head gasket gone. I had an over heating problem for a while and I replaced everything and it still overheated. After all that time and money I spent, it ended up being that the fan was blowing the wrong way. It was blowing air out instead of taking it in. hope this helps!

so does it keep overheating when you rev it?? or is the prob. fixed? i was thinking it might have been a kinked hose... they are sneaky like that, also check lower rad. hoses for kinks.... that happened to me one time and it was hard to notice!!!

yeah it still overheats,
bear in mind I had no overheating probs before the breather hose was kinked(pretty sure of when that happend).

both rad hoses are hot, I ASSUME the waterpump works, because coolant comes out of the bleeder steadily at idle.
dont see any oil in my coolant,
how the heck did your fan blow the wrong way??

Well its a long story, but to make it short I had the wires crossed.

Is your resevior at the same level it was before. It could leaking or losing fluid gradually and you wouldnt know because as long as there is coolant in the overflow tank it will stay level.

overflow was alil below max last week...
its the same today.

i'm ******* baffled..

basically i dont htink the coolant system is damaged!!
can the pcv system, if blocked(by the kinked breather hose) cause overheating?
I would think the unking of the hose would fix it..

nah, the pcv system has nothing to do with the cooling system. do a compresion and leak down test to see if it is your headgasket. Or maybe its an electrical problem like the temperature sending unit gone bad or something.

did you check to make sure you fans were coming on?

some reason, one of my fans never comes on.. so it would get hot while sitting, as i drived it would cool down..

took the keys out, fan cuts on.. put key in, fan wouldnt, weird. but check the fans..

also check your lines again.. make sure no kinks and nothing is blocking them

check your egr and other temp type items make sure they are plugged in!

turn the car on.. does it get hot asap. or take a while??

didnt think it did,
but my Q is could the pcv system being damaged affect the engine in a way to raise engine temps? Basically WTF happened to my engine cuz of that kinked breather hose? I mashed on it pretty hard while it was kinked

Kteller8: i've seen the fan come on during idle,
it comes on, and goes off, like you'd normally expect.
i'll see how long it takes to warm up tomorrow morning.
