trailer for a civic lol
does anyone here think it would be a good idea to tow a small 4'x4' trailer 1295 lbs capacity but probaly only have 500 lbs of cargo on it mainly my tool box my car is a 91 dx with the d16z6 and si tranny I have a cai/ex/centerforce clutch and flywheel it is the dual friction clutch 90% over stock holding capacity I am moving any ideas or suggestions appreciated

why risk that, and put more wear/tear on your car, just rent a uhaul and load it up, or find a friend with a Truck
good luck either way

a miata has 2000 lbs of towing capacity and you can get a very small trailer from harbor freight for about 250 bucks shipped. if you plan to use it a lot its worth it. while were not talking about a miata were talking about similar vehicles, a civic should be able to pull 200 lbs of tongue and 2000 lbs of cargo. basically if you cant lift it and roll it it shoudlnt go on your car.
here are pictures from what i did to my miata, if you take it easy it wont hurt the car. but if you beat on it, well, youll **** up a full size truck if you beat on it.

I've been looking at the Harbor Freight trailers for my track days. How would you hook this up to a civic? I've seen cars like mine pulling trailers, but I'm not sure of the specifics.

500lbs is nothing for that motor...put couple of people in your car and it will add up to 500lbs.

Yeah, I realise that. I was going to do a search for hitches, but wasn't sure what I needed. I found some for around $100, and I think UHaul could install one for a little more than that.
What about wiring? Is there a harness or something that you can buy? How does it wire up? Is it plug n play, or do I need to get out the wire strippers?

Though not a civic, it gets the point across.

Well, I can tell you that from personal experience trailer hitches and civics are probably not the best combination. The civic wagon which I now have the pleasure of driving has a hitch that was used to tow everything from lumber to a 17' sailboat. The engine handled it just fine, however, the chassis was s not so happy. It's actually cracked in half and the only thing holding it together now the trailer hitch itself and some quick welds.
Moral of story: do not overload your trailer.
and civic wagons are beasts

Before i did my swap i towed a 4X8 trailer with my cbr929 on it on a 2000mile round trip back home to Fl with my CRX HF and i drove over 2 super high bridges that crossed the mississipi river. Remeber that this was all with 62 mean HP. Just had to downshift to 3rd to go over the bridges at 55-60 mph I also kept it in 4th and cruised 65-70
My crx has a tow hitch. It was on it when i purchased the car. Its made for the
CRX, its bolted to the body under through the tire area, and also behind the bumper support. Extremely sturdy and unoptrusive, so i left it on. I believe the
previous owner used to tow jet-skis with it.

Yeah, I realise that. There's guys who tow their s2000's behind crv's and civics, as well as s2k's, rx-7's, miata's, mini's towing mini trailers with equipment and tires. I just want to know what's involved with hooking it up after I buy a hitch. I carry all my crap in the trunk on race day, not much different than pulling it on a trailer.
The reason that it says not to tow anything in the manual is for warantee liability. They don't want to be fixing cars that were damaged by idiots like in the video. I'm not looking to tow a fith wheel or anything, just 4 tires a cooler and some tools.

Funny enough, I did see someone in a 6th gen civic dx auto(!) pulling a duallie 5th wheel that was larger (taller, longer and wider) than the car itself down I-90 a few weeks ago. I thought it was being towed by the suv in front of it, because I couldn't see the car at all.

youll wreck your tranny before anything. clutch, then tranny, than pull the chassis all out of shape. not a wise idea.
if there is room for reese hitch on a miata, there is room on a civic. there is PLENTY of room in a civic for a little hitch.

Yeah, if you're pulling a huge load. But like I said, just 4 tires and some tools for auto-x days. Won't put any more load on the car than having a few friends ride along with you.

Yeah, I was going to buy this one: http://www.etrailer.com/produc...1&h=e
But I don't know what else I need as far as wiring and such. Does anyone know anything more about it? Is it just plug and play, or do I have to splice wiring in?

if you go to auto zone they have a trailer wiring kit. you get that if you need the whole thing, it has crimp on connectors that you crimp to your existing tail light harness. you can install it in about 20 mins.
that is a nice hitch. draw tite is quality, and that is a decent price.
do you have a trailer in mind yet?

you can do it! I towed my x-wifes s10 p/u loaded with all her ish and a living room set from North Dakota to New Mexico with my ITR so I wouldn't have to drive her POS and had no problems through some big *** hills in colorado and new mexico and had fun driving back in my car.

I was thinking of just one of the plain ones from Harbor Freight, and building a platform, box, and tire holder. It's cheap, and a few people I know have them. Any other suggestions on a trailer?

harbor freight trailer: that is what im planning to do. take the trailer down to home depot and get a 4x8 piece of treated plywood for the deck and just some tie downs. the less weight the better. the fold up one is only like 220 right now, shipped.
get a spare for the trailer though, its a bitch to get trailer tires fixed in the middle of no where.
