Default 92 civic CX hatchback 1.5L

wife purchased the car new before we got hitched --Its plain, stock, only option was AC -

I'm going to start moding it for the heck of it and to save on gas -
I'll be posting lots of questions in the future -

I'm planning a engine upgrade when this one dies -

I want to add a header, high flow street legal cat, and catback exhaust -

I'm trying to understand the difference in the CX and DX/EX - All the sites out there dont list anything for the CX -

Did the CX have a head that had smaller exhaust ports? I'm going to have to mod the system some since the CX has the cat just below the manifold -

save your money and just swap the motor out for any other honda motor. the cx is the weakest honda motor for the 92-95 civic just my 2cents

If you're looking for gas mileage out of it, try a VX motor from that same generation Honda Civic (92-95). You can also add a rear air deflector (or something like that, I can't remember) that the VX had as an option that helps keep air from being trapped in the rear bumper and creating drag. Pick up some VX or HX rims (9.xx and 11.xx lbs respectively) to reduce rotational mass and pick up a few more MPG.

I averaged almost 41 MPG in a boosted Honda Civic hatch last week. Keeping yourself out of the gas will do a world of difference in how much you get.

The CX motor from those cars is gutless. Its an 8 valve non VTEC motor making somewhere around 70 hp. The VX isn't much better, but it has VTEC-E, which helps to promote fuel economy. Im not sure how much hp it makes. The dx has a 16 valve non VTEC motor, which puts out 92 hp. The EX/SI motor is a SOHC VTEC motor which makes 125 hp.

None of these are monsters and there are more differences between trim lines than just the motor (such as transmissions, brakes, interior options, etc) but if you ever need anything feel free to use the PM function to get ahold of me.

Welcome to the site.

96-00 CX/ DX difference (EJ6 D16Y7):
DX got A/C and power steering, some CX got A/C, some doesn't and it comes with manual steering. 107 hp for both.

Is it the same for previous gen hatchbacks (EG's)

Nope. Some of my numbers may be off for the same reason. I own an EK, not an EG.

I got what you were saying. I was replying no, that the numbers are not the same for the EG as the EK. They all have D15 motors with the exception of the EX/SI and the DX/CX have different HP ratings from each other.

The CX has 70hp and a no power steering. The VX has 92hp. And the DX/LX have 106hp. The VX and DX hp might be off by 1 or 2. This is only for the US 5th gens though. With the Canadian ones however (not relevant but figured I'd mention) the CX has the same engine as the DX. I have a gutless '94 CX myself, and trust me it's not worth the time or $ to mod the engine; but it is great on gas.

I'd def. go for B-series if you hate that D-series motor if money, time, and mileage aren't your problems. I was in the same situation as you before, tried modding a D16Y7 with just I/H/E thinking I would improve it a little but I felt nothing and gained nothing except tickets for a loud exhaust. (not to discourage you or anything) I had a turbo setup with turboxs bov, y8 manifold blah blah blah and wasn;t satisfied so I resorted to a B16A2 for awhile then to a rebuilt B16B. Loved it until I switched cars with my brother and decided to drive his GSX. BUT for gas mileage sure I'd love to drive that D-series motor gets me 52 mpg (1999 EJ6 D16Y7)

i just did a d16z6 swap that i picked up for $200 and put it in myself. d series engines w/ VTEC can take a lot of abuse. if you are looking for good gas and still want a good kick now and then single cam w/ VTEC is the way to go. if there any import shops by your house ask them for a d15b its a jap motor so it will have low milles those go for about $300-$400 but replace the tranny the cx tranny's gears are long as hell, i can hit 80 mph in second gear it sucks for racing

yeah man honestly..... if you're looking for performance, the cx (d15b8) aint got it.

i love single cams so much, i'm swapping it out for a sohc vtec.....

but point being, you really cannot mod that motor to a point where it will be fast. good luck!
