adapter is just a piece that modifies how the linkage hooks up the the shifter, a short shifter is the actual shifter that bolts into the car and the linkage hooks up to and the **** screws onto
adapters usually arent that great and are usually notchy whereas most short shifters reduce the throw in addition to moving where the linkage hooks up to the shifter
